i would find on of the lewis &clark replica trade pipes and go from there. you can find them at mountain man redevous.
 
Iowa maker J P Miller makes some beautiful pipe hawks. He is listed in the Knives annual for this year.

Use a gullotine or spring swedge to kneck the bowl, work the end of the bowl over a small cone hardy or the horn of the anvil to flare it out. Or the flared end of a lug wrench cut off from the rest of the wrench might be about right, depends on barrel




slot the area for the eye. (use a drill to mark the ends of the slot makes a more accurate eye)

hot cut and drift open the eye. cut off from barrell at this point

forge the blade end almost flate but don't close up the hole in the barrell cut with a hacksaw across the now oval hole insert steel bit, weld and forge to shape.
