My favorite knife, an ML kephart, barely throws sparks at all when used w/ a light my fire firerod. Other knives work fine, so it's not the rod. I think the back edge must not be square enough? It's weird because the corner at the top of blade feels sharp to me. is there something I can do to make this work? It's 1095 steel.

i would just advise using a separate striker of some sort. i dont really like striking with a knife, because alot of my main user blades are too soft at the spine anyway.

File the spine flat.

I don't know what "ML" stands for. Do you know the hardness? When you strike the firesteel with the spine does it dull the spine's corner? Sounds like the steel may be too soft to strike with.

Spine sounds appropriately soft. Good for the knife, but less useful as a striker. Use something else as a striker, e.g. piece of hacksaw blade or get a striker from Stomper or Gossman.
