Tweeners to come?

Just looking down the line a little, and wondering about the Tweeners, ‘cause the pics have gotten me all excited.

Tweeners? Tweeners? What the heck is a Tweener? Well, a tweener is something in between this and that, but it’s not one or the other, really — it’s in between, and sometimes it perfectly fills a niche that needs to be filled.

In this case, it’s the soon-to-be new Becker-KA-BAR knives that fall in between the best selling BK-11 Necker with a 3.25 inch blade, and the best selling BK-2 Campanion with a 5.25 inch blade. These new blades should perfectly fill a blank spot in between the two, and I suspect they’ll pull a lot of converts over to Becker knives.

What, exactly, will they be when they come out? Well, I could tell you all kinds of things about them, but it would be pure speculation on my part, because I really don't know. Honestly, at this point, even if I actually knew something, I probably couldn’t tell you, because Ethan, Paul and Bladite would probably gang up on me and make me stand in the corner till after the Blade show... or worse... maybe much worse. I can tell you that I’m eagerly anticipating their arrival though.

Here’s the picture that made me wonder if anyone else is looking forward to these as much as I am, and wondering which ones will actually be produced? Already there has been a strong interest in the recurved one, but some of the others look pretty juicy to me, too.

For quite awhile now I — and others — have been hoping for a new Becker knife with a 3 1/2 to 4 inch blade using the traditional Becker handles. Judging from the photos, that’s not exactly what we’re getting — not exactly. The new blade designs look really good, but the handles... well, the handles look pretty good, too, just not what I’d thought they would be. Trust Ethan and Toooj to come up with what’s just right for a new blade. I know that I, for one, am really excited about these new blades, and can’t wait until they’re available.

Maybe, if we’re lucky, we’ll learn more about them in the near future from Ethan and Toooj. In the meantime, though, what do you think? Any thoughts on these great new Beckers?

When will they be out? My best guess at the moment, is after the Blade show at the beginning of June.

that recurve has me hot and bothered. As does the Magnum Camp.

as for release date.....i'm still cash strapped, no new trucking contracts in a while......hopefully by the time these blades release i'll be flush with sheckles again.

I hear you. Hopefully, we'll all be flush by then.

Very excited about the upcoming blades. I don't think the recurves sell quite as well as straight blades. If you have a belt sander a recurve is easily done. I would vote for a straight blade configuration and make one into a recurve if I get the itch. :D

I think the recurves look cool. Personally, though, I don't want one — I think they're a bear to sharpen, but that's just me.

A lot of people really, really like them, though, and I have a feeling that they'll be big sellers.

I'm with you on preferring straight blades, but it looks like they're giving us a choice, which is a very good thing.

Youre not the only one waiting for the Tweeners...The Tweeners, Magnum Camp and especially that recurve on the picture are all products i cant wait to handle.

I sure hope we'll get some more info with pics soon. And a release date! Waiting is the worst part!

Well, I think the BK-5 Magnum Camp will be out soon (April? May?), but the others? Well, I don't really know for sure.

The only pictures we've seen so far have been the ones from Ethan's trip to the factory in New York, and I think we'd all like some more teasers at this point.

I'm just hoping that Ethan or Toooj can drop in and give us some more info, without divulging state secrets that threaten national security (or sales).

I've gone entirely to mousepad/strop-type sharpening.
A $0.50 padded fine-grit nail file is a perfect sharpening surface and due to its narrow profile (3/4"?) you can do a recurve with your eyes closed. Just put it on a flat surface. My Boker Hyper has a slight recurve and it's easy. Or wrap some leather on a dowel and fill it with a stropping compound - instant recurve (or any-curve) sharpener.

I'd love a Becker with a 3.5-3.75" handle and a 2.9" blade. Also one with a 3.75" blade. As it stands, I'll try to make one myself from scratch to fill that gap.

Yep, you're right. Not only can you sharpen a recurve with sandpaper wrapped on a curved object, but I've done it myself in the past, and it works very well. I don't know why I didn't think of that before I posted earlier. Sometimes we old people have brain-lock.

You don't really have to make one from scratch — just wait awhile. It just might be that one of the new Beckers is just what you're looking for.

Now, if you want to make a knife just for the pure enjoyment of making a knife for yourself, that's a different story.:D

I don't care how many knives I already have , I WANT A BECKER LIKE ON THAT DESK PHOTO !! Correction : I want two darnit !!

You know , many years ago I asked Camillus to mail me a catalog. There where no dealers in my area. I seen the Becker section and said to myself, " now there's some heavy duty serious knives I need to have. "

Now with me having a computer and access to a great dealer , my wish has come true. Yes , I buy other knives , but the Becker line has me hooked. I like others, am looking forward to knives that fall between the BK-2 ( coming tomorrow !!) and the BK-9. I have Kabar's also (USMC) , but the Beckers have that extra heavy-duty thing going on. Know what I mean !! When I'm in the middle of nowhere , I know I got a friend by my side.

Thanks Mr. Becker. We owe it all to you. And the recipes ain't bad neither :)

Okay Guys,

Just a little bit of info. We ARE working on the smaller Beckers. The handle profile is being redesigned and the recurve.... well, we'll see. I'm thinking more traditional (meaning; better selling) blade shapes will be offered first. We are sorting through approx 6-7 blade patterns and a couple of handles.
Now stop drooling, Bladie is complaining that you guys are shorting out the electrical system.;)

Ah, Toooj, see what you've done — now Bladite is drooling all over the page, and it's making ugly spots on the pixels. We just had those pixels cleaned, and now this: I don't know if those drool spots will ever come out.

Thanks for the info, Toooj. We knew that you were working on some new, smaller Beckers (we have pictures to prove it). What we don't know, is what they'll be... and that's the way it has to work: it's not time for show and tell... yet.

Beckers have always been truly outstanding hard use knives, as have KA-BAR's, and the joining of the the two seems like the perfect marriage to me. But — to my mind — there's always been an ugly gap between the BK-11 and the BK-2, a gap that is now going to be filled. Filled with what? Well, we'll just have to wait and see, I guess.

But at least we know it's coming, and that's exactly why I started this thread; to keep the interest alive. Besides, we all like speculating, don't we?

We like it when you can pop in like this and give us little hints; it makes everyone feel like they're part of something new.

I have a feeling — just a feeling, mind you — that new Beckers ("tweeners") in between the BK-11 and the BK-2 are going to be absolutely huge sellers for you, and I think they'll pull a lot of people to the Becker line. I know that I, for one, will be among the first in line for Beckers in the new, handy size, with good, comfortable handles.

As for me, I'll be using all of my considerable insanity to help keep the interest alive... and growing.

Now, as for Bladite — he's still drooling. Please toss him a Machax so he doesn't make the page all soggy.
