I've recently written an online article about batoning for the on-line magazine called Forest and Stream that can be found here:

http://www.forestandstream.com/kgd/the-skill-of-batoning

For those of you not familiar with this site, it is a free on-line magazine that has been set up not too long ago by Sharpshooter of sharpshooter sheath systems. I used to really love the free on-line Outdoors-Magazine and then it went off line. Sharpshooter's site is just beginning to accumulate articles now and I hope it matures to the same quality of resource as OM over time.

I wasn't sure whether to post this here, but given I am linking to a magazine with a very different theme than BF or W&SS I am hoping it is okay. Afterall, we have one of our esteems moderators posting their magazine articles on Woodsmonkey regularly and another of our moderators is a founding member of this new magazine site. We also have at least 4 contributing authors to this mag that frequent W&SS.

Big Mike is one of the moderators in the forum portion over there and I originally found the place by following the link in his tagline. BigMike is also a frequent author in the magazine and has some excellent articles documenting his outdoor life. Check out his latest one on the same page as my link.

I know a few of you frequent this cozy little place and all are welcome. So if you happen to be caught in the 'new post' clicking rut at this moment, how about testing that link above and try exploring something a bit different?

Awesome write up ken. give yourself a pat on tha back for me LOL. Thanks for the link to that site.

BMB - its one of Doc Canada's blades. I believe it was a linder 12" machete.

A very good article on the in's and out's of batoning. Good, clear illustrative photos, too.

And you're right, Ken, chopping with an axe is not as easy for we old folks. Batoning is far easier, with far more control.

Oh man, yet another forum to visit.. I don't have time for all of this! But somehow I make the time.... ;)

thanks buddy. i have to second the dont hold the wood and chop. i got 5 stitches saturday from being stupid. you may think you know what your doing but mistakes happen. next time id rather hit a rock then my hand.

Thank you! I've been jonesing for my Outoors-magazine fix. Adding it to my favorites now.

Thanks for the kind words Ken, but my photo essays amount to little more then fluff and eye candy when compared to the articles that people like you and John (countryboycansurvive) have started to produce.

Forest & Stream is just getting started, but we hope to grow it into a valuable resource for the hiking and camping community.

With a focus on family values, getting young people out in the woods is one of our goals:
...woods skills are best taught in a multi generational environment.

We also look to appeal to seasoned woodsbums as well as newcomers, in-depth articles and discussion of non-mainstream skills should offer something for everybody.

Forest & Stream is in search of knowledgeable authors and I know we have more then our share here at the W&SS sub-forum,
...so if you are inclined to pass on the skills you have learned please submit an article.
