Here is my latest project. It is the barrel for the gun/hawk Ive been telling you about. Harry and I are putting the twist in it while it is held tight in the press. Thats a 4 foot long double handled cheater bar we are grunting on.

foto doesn't show here, Bruce, nor does it cut-and-pasteURL show a foto either.

Well I got lucky - I checked the properties of the dreaded red X and saw there was no file extension (.jpg) on the end of the file name so I gave it a shot and.....

I now have the 26" barrel annealed and turned it down on the lathe. Next comes the hard part. It needs the bore drilled to .50 calibur. Ive asked several gun smiths and barrel makers if they can do it and they all said no. The only one that could do it said "My inurance wont allow me to because of liability". I ordered a liner for it and just need the hole drilled to .750. It will need to be done with the special gun drill lathe to keep the hole in the middle of the barrel. Anybody have such a lathe?

Bruce,Yeah, I beleive I do. I will get his address and such for you, if you like. It is ol' Bob White, Knoxville or Galesburg, Ill., knife maker and gunmaker, an old cohort of my gunsmith/sheath maker.

Cliff is world famous and does all the work for such gun making luminaries as Bowen Classic Arms (www.bowenclassicarms.com)
He is the MAN when it comes to boring and lining.

Well Bruce, I can't wait to see it. Make sure you post details about the action. I'm not sure why you aren't drilling it yourself but if you can't find someone, I'll put you in touch with some of the better bbl makers in the country.
Do you want it rifled also or is it just going to be a smooth bore?

Peter, This one is going to be a smooth bore. It is my own design with allot of influence from the 17th century. It will sport a "match lock" ignition and fold away trigger. I may have to do it myself but really want a straight hole. Its hard to do a 24" with a regular machinist lathe. They have a gun drill lathe that rotates in both directions at once.

Thanks for the prospects guys!

looking nice Bruce, looks hot to me :D

I'll ask a good friend of mine.
the guy that razed him was a gun smith and did that sort of thing.
he worked for him also
I'm just not sure if he's still doing it or not..I'll check.
if he is I'll PM you..

:)

Hi Bruce

It has been great fun watching and helping with this project. I look forward to using the discarded section of the billet to continue forging and twisting for a knife billet. The highlight of my day is walking through the shop door and starting another day- knife making with you- I have all ready learned so much - Thank you for your patience and instruction.

Harry

Harry Welcome to our family! It was a good day in the shop for me having you help twist this big billet. You will get in on it again before it done. Its been fun showing you the ropes on knifemaking. You need to show off some of your knives here.
