Two decent gerbers?

No, no. But you didn't understand what I was saying.

I was kidding BS. My point was that he quoted my entire post, and commented all along the way. No problemo.

But, I had never seen anyone IN THEIR SAME POST, quote my entire post again, and have all new commentary.

It was two looks from him at the same exact subject. Many folks just do their commentary all at once and are done.

I was amused. I didn't mean to confuse you.

Robert

Wait, so, it was the fact that he quoted more than one of your posts at a time that was strange?

...Like this, for example?

I have to say Bladescout, I didn't mean for you to take my comments too personally.

Obviously you did. Never, ever, have I seen someone irritated enough to quote an entire post, comment thoughout, the repaste the same full post into THE SAME REPLY POST, and comment all over again on the same post.

Certainly for me, a double quote with annotations is a first!

I am really genuinely curious about what was so odd, and I still don't think I understand.

wow this thread really took off in a bunch off different and strange directions lol:eek:
thanks for all the great responses as well!

Quoting someone is a sign of irritation? Commenting, repasting posts, and annotations, too?

Because I quoted you earlier and made some comments, but I'm pretty sure I wasn't angry when I did it...

EDIT: Oh god I'm quoting you again I'm sorry I don't want you to think I'm mad at you or anything.

I actually thought Bladescout's post was very helpfully annotated. It was simple to follow along with the thoughts he was sharing, and that makes him an effective communicator, I hope myself and others are able to follow his lead in the future.

Yeah, me too. Can't imagine why it got the reaction it did.

Thanks, guys. Much appreciated.
For a moment there, I felt like I had entered the ...

To say that I was surprised at MFs response is an understatement. It takes all kinds on the interweb, I guess??
People are different, thats for cotton pickin' sure.

---------------------

Back to Gerbers and the aforementioned Gerber 'Guardian;' after wanting one for years, I got a vintage one a was initially very happy with it.

I managed to break the tip how ever. This was just by the sheath being manipulated (twisted) with the knife in it. I heard/felt it snap.
Dont think, I can blame it on the Gerber quality though. Its a very thin pointy dagger and it was my fault. Further more conventional small dagger-like knives like that are inherently more weak at the point than some other more sturdy knife designs.

The Guardian is designed for a purpose and Im sure it does that very well if taken properly care of.
Ill have to have a knifemaker make a new point on it and It'll be an okay knife again, though of course the value is now low.
Not that it matters to me; Im not a collector per se and the knife wasnt that expensive to begin with (annoying to break a knife none the less - even if just at the very point).

If it came to that, I would buy another Guardian (just take better care of it, now that I know its limitations). Im a fan of the MKII, MKI and the guardian designs as mentioned.

My latest Gerber purchase was a used good condition one of these (random pic):

Not bad at all, though I believe its not American made.

Ive wanted one for the longest time.

...I gotta say its one of the best knife ads I've seen in a while.

A while??? That's the best knife ad in history man!!! I had not seen that.

Gerber does that to people. It would be great if the people running Gerber were listening. I really think they could hold on to their place as the "big box store/blister pack king of knives" and still make their profits, maintain their price point, and work off of their original image buy changing just a few things. They can even keep Bear Grylls...just make his knives a little bit better, pay attention to a few details that matter...they'd come roaring back for the simple reason that if you don't belong to a forum like this, you may not have gotten the word that "they're crap"...which of course is way to simple to sum it up and thus probably wrong...and they'd win back at least some of the knife knuts!

This sort of thing has happened in other industries too. Ruger was on the outs with "people in the know" because of some political and politically driven product decisions they made 20 years ago. Their quality never really suffered but their image did. Not to the extent that Gerber's has but to this day, there are people who simply will not consider buying any Ruger product...as a political statement.

Yeah, good commercial, Chinese knife. *shrug*

There is a good review thread with detailed photos HERE.

I handled one at a local shop but decided that I could not purchase an A/O knife lacking a safety mechanism, I'm not a fan of torsion-bars anyway, the handle wasn't very comfortable, I prefer tip-up carry, and it isn't USA.

Other than those aspects, it seemed like a very good, well-designed, well-made knife. But I held off and purchased (just a week ago) the new Gerber Propel AO (Iwent with the 420HC model but there is also a S30V version):

Made in USA, The 420HC Propel is ~2.5x more expensive than the Instant. I like the handle better, it includes a safety mechanism that functions to lock the blade closed as well as open (like the Benchmade 585 I also own), but the tanto-grind isn't even and the thumb-studs are over-sized (perhaps designed for gloved use - the thing is definitely "tactical"). I still don't like the torsion spring, so I immediately dis-assembled the knife and removed it. Now the action is better than the axis-lock on my comparable Benchmade 520! Flip-open, flip-close  I'll even out the grinds after it dulls.

I hope that they release the Propel at a lower price lacking the spring (though that might negate the name ;) ), but i have been very happy with the purchase! (only optics planet has them in stock)

Neither Tanto config nor serrations is something I want on my (user/EDC) knives, but as per another thread; to each his own.
Your cash, you bought it and if it works for you, then that is all that matters. Congrats.

thanks for the great responses!
I always wanted an lmf before I really got into knives, i just recently considered getting one but then did some research and did not like the tang construction of it at all..for me in a fixed it has to be absouluty full tang or nothin..is the lmf pictured below considered full tang tho?

lmf-ii-tang.png_fulljpg_1.jpg

From personal experience I can tell you the LMF II is a great knife. I carried one for a year in Iraq and it was beat to hell and back and worked great. The insulated handle worked as promised. I had to smash through a fuse box to cut power to a house and I didn't get shocked. The steel was easy to sharpen in the field, the sheath was very secure with no rattle, the outside of the sheath is coated in a soft rubber so it is quiet in the bush, and the built in sharpener even did its job.

For the money its a great soldier blade.
