After deciding upon my next knife purchase I went in search of a dealer. Cost was important, but definitely not my top consideration – I was mainly looking for reliability and customer service. I am not a veteran at purchasing knives online. I did quite a bit of research (including BladeForums) and narrowed the choice to three possible dealers.

Among those three dealers, I started with the one that was geographically closest.

I sent the dealer a simple e-mail asking if they had the knife that I was looking for. After 3 days I had no response so I sent them another e-mail. Finally, 7 days after my original e-mail, they responded. This didn't seem like a good harbinger of things to come.

I went to the next dealer on my list. It has now been 12 days and they have NEVER responded to my e-mail.

Next, I tried Bayou Lafourche Knife Works (www.knifeworks.com). I sent them an e-mail and Kristi responded WITHIN 2 HOURS. I followed up with a phone call to add a special request. They handled everything, including the special request, with no problem. They were great to deal with and my knife is on the way. I am very happy with them

I gave up on the first two companies. I figured that if an on-line company cannot respond to e-mail when I want to make a PURCHASE that I would sure not want to deal with them for future Customer Support. I should add that I was looking for was a quality production knife – nothing exotic.

The other GOOD in my search was Shootist16. I talked with him on the phone and he was very helpful even though he did not have what I was looking for. Before starting my search I had never heard of Bayou Lafourche or Shootist16. However, for my next purchases I will definitely be talking with both of them.

What are the names of the two companies? We are all aware that there are bad companies, but if you do not name them, what is the point of reporting what happened?

I have also had the pleaseure of dealing with Bayou Lafourche and Shootist16, and also highly recommend them.

Though I've been around awhile, I've do not think I have ever had the pleasure of a deal with Dennis, a/k/a Shootist16, but your impression of him seems to be very widely held.

BayouLaFourche I have dealt with and my experiences mirror yours; they are great.

Please post the name of the dealers you tried to deal with.

This forum is here to report those kind of incidents,
and naming the dealers involved not only makes your fellow forumites
aware of potential problems, it also allows the dealer to offer an
explanation if he/she is a member here.

Thanks in advance.

mikemck and Code 3,

My main goal was to give kudos to those that deserved it. Maybe I should have left the "2 bad" out of my subject line. I discussed my bad experiences only to illustrate the contrast with the positives of dealing with Bayou Lafourche and Dennis.

I don't know why the dealers didn't respond. It could have been that they were just having a bad day and made a mistake (happens to me) or maybe they got a new employee who screwed up.
I have always felt that anyone who has a problem with me should come and talk to me first. Extending this idea to others only seems appropriate. The proper thing to do would be to call the companies first and ask them their side of the story before publicly naming them in complaints. Since other good dealers were available I just didn't want to take the time to research the issue.

Besides, mamma always told me that if you can't say anything nice…

In all fairness, the on-line knife shop that I deal with let me know right up front that they get so many emails that it might be a very long time before they can get back to someone. They have a toll free number and recommend that you call if you want need an answer quickly.
