After seeing that big two handed chopper that my friend John posted, and looking for the old Lady Gertrude sword pictures it got me wanting to do a big 2 hander like that for myself, forged this one tonight from some 5160. The blade will be a bit more curved after I have done the bevels, and the tang will also maybe. Modeled slightly after the big two handed short polearms the guys with big ears used in Lord of the Rings :) It was in the quick scene of the Battle of the First Age.

Mike, it's a little over 3 feet, I don't have a tape measure though to be sure though.

GD, bit bigger hehe it's like 2 inches wide! :D

3 feet!!! Holy s&!t, I would love to do something that big but I don't have the capacity to heat treat or quench it. Keep us updated on your progress.

Hehe yeah it's a big one, feels like a BEAST too with all the leverage on the long handle. Do you have a forge with two open doors? It's not salt pots (:)), but I take my NC knifemaker which I added a door with a second opening too and run the blade back and forth through the chamber, Like I said it's not salt pots but it is the best I have right now. Sure will keep you guys posted.

I have two forges one nc and one I built and both have two doors. Your able to keep that much steel at austenizing temp, I'm impressed. I'll have to give it a try sometime.

It's not as hard as you think to get it hot and keep it hot, but heating it evenly is tricky, I usually start with a lower pressure and bring it up slowly, makes you wish you had 3 hands :D One to mess with the pressure, two to hold the blade and one to work the magnet-on-a-stick. To make things a bit easier, I start out with a high normalize heat, because I know I am going to overheat things the first time, then I go to a lower temperature, then the third one I usually have the hang of what non magnetic + a little bit looks like by eye color wise, the fourth heat I quench.
