I decided to head over to Walmart today because I just had to have a "knife fix" if you know what I mean. I didn't want to order online and wait. I wanted something now.

I picked up a CRKT M16-13Z (combo edge) and a Kershaw Scallion (black TiNi).

Got both knives for $68.

First off all they are both liner locks which I said I wouldn't buy anymore. I'm glad I did buy them.

The liner lock on the CRKT I cannot even get to disengage when white knuckling at all. This is without LAWKS enabled too. It's the perfect size knife and I like everything about it. I now see why the M16's are such great sellers. This one has Zytel handlels but you'd never know it. It feels much more like aluminum to me.

The Scallion is great too. The assisted opening works fantastic and it's just a great little knife. The entire thing is black and the name "Kershaw" is written on the handle in a sliverish white color. Just the outline of the name not all colored in. I just really like this knife. It would make a perfect "office" knife if someone needed one.

I guess I got stuck on Benchmade for so long that even after I started the Spec Bump passaround I didn't have a lot of desire to get another smaller Kershaw. This Scallion is great. I love it. I loved the leek I had a little less because next time I get a leek it will be with a frame lock instead of a liner. There are however no problems with the liner lock on this Scallion. It locks up great and I also cannot get it to disengage when white knuckling. Although, I highly doubt that I'd white knuckle such a small knife.

Some may think that the steel on these knives may not be the best (420HC and AUS6M) but they are fine for me and the tasks that I will throw at them.

Joe, i bought the Scallion as a "fix" and liked it too. Problem is, my brother liked it more than I did! He uses it everyday and loves the 420 steel. CRKT's AUS6 has impressed me also. Glad you like your knives.:)

I carried the M16 for a while, and used it only for cardboard, paper, and light cutting in general.

It did dull quick, but it wasn't a big deal.

The only reason I still don't carry it, (other than my Spydercos) is a dropped it and got a huge dent in the edge. But before that, I loved it. I did find the handle to be a bit slippery, but I'm no Navy SEAL, so I don't really have to worry about my hands being wet around town.

:)

I've had both of these knives, though in slightly different forms.

Your scallion looks way different (better) than the one I had. Is that FRN or aluminum?

Also, that doesn't look like TiNi...maybe there's something weird going on in the photo, but it looks more like a matte finish.

Weirdly, I had a plain blade scallion and still have a TiNi M16.

Good little knives. The M16 is especially reliable. I've really beaten the hell out of mine.

When I bought the Scallion at Walmart it said (TiNi) on the label. It is a matte finish but I don't know that much about coatings so I was just going by what I read. The handles are Aluminum with full stainless liners.

Both are great knives. I can't seem to put the Scallion down.

I think the one I had was (or seemed to be) more like DLC coating. I did like it though. They seem to be very addictive knives!

I carry the M16-13z as a working knife for State Guard drill. It is used strictly as a working (Utility) knife and a companion for my Leatherman Kick. The troops love it and many of them have purchased their own at Wally World. It is a good sturdy and well designed tool. I hit the Sharpmaker and strop any time I do a lot of cutting, so edge is no problem. As readers know, my EDC are all Spydies but I do like CRKT knives for down and dirty stuff.

I have a blue aluminum Scallion with a plain silver blade but I don't have those 3 small holes in the blade. :(  They look cool.

Scallion is a great knife. The liner lock seems very secure and the AO works perfectly. (I also have a SOG Twitch 2 which is a bit hit and miss with opening and lock up.) The 420 HC gets the job done.

Chances are your CRKT M16-13Z is AUS 4, not 6. CRKT and others have been cheapening their steels lately and it irritates me to see the eBay folks still selling the knives as having AUS 6 blades. All those knives are being sold with the spec advertisements and it really ticks me off, as there's no way of telling the new-spec knives from the old. Let the buyer beware!

Joe Dirt,

I'm a relatively new member but have been lurking for some time.

I was happy to see your post on these two knives. I own them both and got them from Walmart, as you did.

I love both of these knives. I only have a small collection started so far, but I would definetly put these two in my top 4 favorites.

Glad you like them, hope others will too. Thanks for the review :)
