Two Knifemakers, One new Company: Downeast Knife Company

Nice profile and grinds on the prototype. Looks really good! Best of luck and I'll check them out when they are available at Kittery.

any word on why D2? i haven't had the best of luck field sharpening D2. the knife looks great but i'd much prefer a simple carbon steel with a coating. is that on the horizon?

Good Luck with the venture! can't wait to see what else you guys got!

D2 is easy to maintain in the field if you sharpen D2 like the Dozier shop. I use a fairly course grit stone, around 200, when grinding the edge. I finish with medium and then very very light passes with the same stone. This leaves the edge really toothy but fairly aligned at this point. It can shave but is still course. Then I go right to a strop loaded with green compound. The strop will align all those "picket fence" teeth and the blade will be frightfully sharp and refined, but in an agressive way. Since you can simply strop to bring back the edge over a dozen times between grindings, you can just take a bit of leather or cardboard to strop in the field.

Hello everyone,
Sorry I haven't been able to post before now. I'm having a hard time getting my dial-up connection to work. I just got the grips for the prototype done, got the blade polished up, and put it all together. We're still waiting on the artwork for the maker's mark. Scott and I got a few pictures taken.

You can see from the pictures how the knife can be taken apart to clean or replace/interchange the grips. There will be at least 4 different grips available. If a customer decides later on that they want something laser etched on their grips, they can be removed and sent to us for the work.

Please tell us what you think!
Thank you,
Lamont

p.s. We hope to have some sheath examples ready in the next few days. Stay tuned...

We just got off the phone with Paul Bos. After the prototypes, he will be doing the heat treat on the blades! To maximize edge holding ability and toughness, the blades will be hardened, snap tempered, and cryo-treated.
Thanks,
Scott

Just stumbled onto this post, and I must say, I'm impressed. I LIKE the prototype, and I also like the philosophy behind the whole idea. Will there be a "mailing list", or..........so that we can find out info as to when they will be available, cost, etc??

I like the design, very utilitarian. I would say though that I prefer slightly larger choils
for a grip choice and slightly extended thumb ramps ala Snoody and Ritter grips.
I like the ease of takedown and the exposed lanyard area too.
Any ballpark on price?

The versatility that these knives will employ is unlike anything I've seen. Great work on making those handles versatile!

A Paul Bos heat treat should seal the deal and make these knives amazing cutters!

I look forward to seeing what else you two come up with!

Hi guys,
The web page is coming along great. Its almost ready. We will start taking orders for these very soon. I'll keep you posted.
Thank you,
Scott

Looks like a very successful partnership is getting going here.

I really like the desgn of this knife. I'm not sure if this was already answered, but here goes anyway. What does each maker do in the making of these knives?

Hi All,

Keith,
Lamont and I are sharing every task. If it needs to get done, one of us grabs it and goes! That seems to work best at the moment.

I just came up from the shop after making this sheath, and taking these pics. This sheath can be worn right side or left, horizontal or vertical, or inside the waistband. I fitted this one with a large Tek-Lok, but a small Tek-Lok is also going to be available.

We had a 190 mile round trip drive up north today to meet with the laser engraver, but was it worth it. There is literally no limit to the amount of clip art this guy has.

Furthermore, a customer can supply their own art (must be a bitmap) and have it engraved on their grips starting at $50.00! Here's a few he did for us today as an example. Like I said, it was well worth the drive. Tomorrow Prototype 1 goes to Chris Kravitt at Treestump Leather for its leather sheath.

What do you think?

Good-looking website overall, easy to navigate, logical layout and categories. The only problem my old eyes found was that the pale brown regular size lettering didn't have enough contrast. I had to magnify the page to 125% to read it easily. Fortunately, the broad borders and uncrowded text allowed for that nicely.

Congratulations from a fellow Mainer! I have a seasonal restaurant in the Lake Region area and appreciate the dedication it takes to make a go of it here in the Peoples Republic. Good luck to you. I hope to get the opportunity to visit one day.

When will this knife be added to your web site?

Bill

Scott does awesome work making no-frills knives for the working man. The philosophy behind this company is great as well. Best of luck to you Scott and crew!

Unveil it when you want.
It is 99% with the exception of the Shopping CART, which will be implemented when Lamont and Scott get all the particulars lined up.

The drive today to West Branch Traders today was worth it. Paul has clipart of everything imaginable. He had Harley Davidson stuff, animals of every type, military art for the Army, Navy, Air force and Marines. He also had alot of law enforcement, fire department and other organizations like the VFW, American Legion, etc. Very cool stuff. I couldn't believe the level of detail. Can't wait to see how it looks on natural Micarta and orange G-10!

I truly love those engravings! They are a very unique way personalize a knife even further!

On the side, I received your Sparrowhawk today and it is spectacular in every way. It can split hairs and fits my hand like a glove!
