I have a unique and pressing question: Which knife to get? After spending a while checking out knives, I came to the obvious conclusion that I clearly need a tactical folder for my cushy safe first-world life with no threats whatsoever.

I’ve narrowed it down to two knives - and they are, of course, entirely different in almost every way, except that they’re both about $100.

THE CHOICES:

Cold Steel Recon 1 (S35vn)

Pros:
  • Now with a sharpening choil!
  • DLC and S35VN! Tri-Ad lock!
  • Clip point!
  • Seriously, I like clip points!
  • As close as I can get to a 4” Espada.

Cons:
  • Thumb studs and a lockback. BORING.
  • Have to modify the G10 just to carry it.
  • Kinda boring overall. Black, black, more black.

Fox 479 Karambit (N690co)

Pros:
  • Emerson wave!
  • Silver twill! Fancy!
  • WA-CHA! WHOOSH! HI-YA!
  • Hawkbills are pretty useful! I’m telling myself that. Don’t crush my dreams.
  • Probably really fun to use.

Cons:
  • “KARAMBIT”. Yeah, I know it’s a karambit. Don’t have to write it all over the blade.
  • Sharpening a recurve. Gross.
  • Hawkbills are uniquely bad for some cutting tasks - Like anything that involves shaving/carving.
  • Sticks out of the pocket a notable amount.
  • “WA-CHA! WOOSH! HI-YA!”

I’d like to hear your thoughts. (Before you say it, yeah, I’ll probably ultimately get both.)

Given your "cushy safe first-world life with no threats whatsoever" status in life I'd go for the Karambit cuz "WA-CHA! WOOSH! HI-YA" might spice things up a bit. But please take some WA-CHA! WOOSH! HI-YA lessons so you don't accidentally poke yourself.

The fact that you put that Karambit in there means that's the direction you really want to go, I say go with your gut and get it. it'll be what makes you happy.

EDIT: Is that a lefty Karambit?

As much as I do not like Emersons or Cold Steel, I have to ask if the Wave is licensed. If not, my decision would be made for me...

I would buy something other than those two brands.

Yeah, sounds like you've already made up your mind. I know what you mean about the blade printing, that kind of stuff drives me nuts. If you have to print "tactical" all over a blade, it may just be......Uh, well you know. :D.

Isn't it Springfield that embosses "Grip Zone" in huge font all over the grips of their pistols? That one thing keeps me from buying one. It just looks a bit too "short bus" for me to wrap my head around. And one of my favorite carry guns is a Springer, but on the 1911 side. So no plastic to melt into.

I am not a huge fan of CS, mostly because I don't care for lockbacks. But, get the Recon One, because I hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaattte that billboarding on the Karambit. It's soooooo unnecessary, ugly and stupid. Completely ruins that knife for me, if it wasn't there, or at least 20 times smaller I would have bought one already. I mean, why not start writing it on every knife? Fox? Hello? Why isn't there DESERT FOX!™ written on my Desert Fox Knife? Or at least DROPPOINT!™ ?!
*leaves and grumbles* :mad::confused:

I would vote Recon1. At least you would get some real use out of it (whichever meaning you give to the word "use").

Besides a Pocket Bushman, I have never owned any other Cold Steel products and if I was to try one, I would probably get a Recon 1. Everyone speaks highly about it.

I like black, black, and more black actually. What I don't like, and never liked about CS, is all there thumb stud opening crap! Time to get with the times CS!
Quality flippers, autos! C'mon!!, lets start getting interesting!

Not the gardening tool

I like the CS Recon or I think a better inexpensive option is the Yojimbo

Plus you can get a trainer in the series
