Two knives! Gotta choose!

I've studied Filipino martial arts but was never instructed on the use of the karambit, so what I know has been done training with other guys based on what we saw. There are a lot of very good martial artists demonstrating karambits on YouTube, and Tuhon Ray Dionaldo probably ranks right up there with Doug Marciada. The karambit is OK, but it is a young man's weapon. There is a lot more to bringing a karambit in to play vs a 4 inch knife. You are fighting within the reach of your opponent. Legally you will be forcing the use of the weapon.

I have:
- Bastinelli Creations PiKa
- Emerson Karambit fixed blade
- 5.11 Karambit from Steve Terani

This is my YouTube Portal for Martial Arts. I have not done much work on it in the last 5yrs, but there are some great videos.

God for bid if you would ever need to use a karambit or for that manor any knife for self defense the Karambit would certainly get attention

I knife with Recon written on it also is gonna make them smile :)

I used to think the karambit would be a neat self-defense weapon, or more accurately a deterrent, because of the uniqueness of the blade. I can't help but feel that the lack of reach from the blade means you should be prepared to grapple with an opponent also and arm/hand control is something to be exceptional good at. I think this is where the trapping comes in but that was certainly a huge aspect of wrestling when I practiced that back in the day. The lack of distance just seems like there's no way to avoid an attackers hands on you at some point if they're committed to the attack.

From an attacker's perspective, I feel like it has to look like you're walking towards a bees nest. You're okay from a distance and you might get a few little distance shots but the closer you get the more stings you're likely to take and if you get it real close and piss of the nest, things could go badly or you need to run quickly. For the defender, keeping the distance is the goal... unless you're going after someone with a gun but then you're already in a bad spot aren't you?

I've accepted that fact that I'm useless with a bladed item for self-defense but I'm not against it as a deterrent and I think the karambit certainly does that part well. I'm not a small guy so I have that to take into account, and I avoid situations as that put me into self-defense situations... like the night-life. I'm pretty boring.

Carried my recon 1 the other day for a change, honestly it should be my faithful edc, there is almost nothing wrong with it ,other than there should be more in my collection,Cold Steel has been taking lots of my $$ lately....get the recon

Or, mix it up and add an more curves like the Matriarch.

Knife wise? CS Recon 1, it's my good gardening knife for a reason, throw it into anything and everything and you'll be fine.

As someone who has practiced martial arts for 14 years? Neither, not because they're not good, not because I practice empty hand, but because you have to commit to a school.

If you are willing to commit to a school, IMO go with the Recon 1, because there are more styles that just let you swing around a long stick, while only a few that let you swing around a karambit.

Both. They’re so completely different that making a decision between the two seems to be an illogical question.

Update, because I know so many of you are totally emotionally invested in this:

I went with the Recon 1, after recalling the dozen or so times I have ordered more aggressive-looking knives and left them on the counter for weeks because I knew there was a 0.001% chance I’d be in a situation at any point of the day that I would feel comfortable using it, and it doesn’t have the idle in-hand fidget factor to otherwise justify it.
