Got these finished up last night. Both are made from Nash/Metro leaf springs. The top knife has a 7" blade, maple burl handle and WI fittings. The bottom knife has a 7 1/2" blade with a claro handle and WI fittings. Both are 12 to 12 1/2" overall.....

just terrific! Your style is a great one and very recognizable. Funny you made these from 'Metro" springs.. The mother of my childhood friend in Healdton OK, ("Jimmy Don") had a Nash Metro; turquoise'n white no less... When she'd take us somewhere in it we'd slump down in the seats so no one would see us!! Now the damned things are worth a fortune! :)

regards, mitch

Mitch, I got the springs from an older fellow that was re-building one. I remember riding in one after a little league practice a couple years ago. I had to slump just to get into it. I think the back seat was just ment for a medium size dog or real small kids. I wasn't much smaller at 12 than I am now.......

Thats nice Raymond.

How did you make the fittings? I need to learn to do that! Very cool.....

Those are purty enough were I dont even miss the pattern in the steel Ray. I'd love to have one of your knives. Lets do a trade sometime.

hey blgoode, I tried something different on both knives. The bolsters are two pieces, normally I do just one but wanted to see how it would work dubbled up. After I have the tang hole fitted to the blade I mark top and bottom and then grid to the shape I'm wanting. The rest is done with round files.

I just give it to the wife, not sure what happens after that. As long as I can buy supplies thats all I care about..... I've got 3 shows back to back. Mainly just trying to make myself a large inventory in case things do sell.

Beautiful knives Raymond. That claro is super too. Do you think the spring steel is 5160?

RL

Those ar purdy Ray. Do you file those ferrel flutes in? How do you get rid of the file marks? How do you darken the hardware? Enquiring minds want to know.

Ray, that's one way to make an old Nash look good! Yeah, they WERE the ugliest cars ever created. Uglier than funeral or clown cars. I can see my mother in law, proud as heck, riding in one of those. I really like your knives, fella.

Roger, These leaf springs were made in England. I did get them analized. The carbon content is just .4% but there's 2% silica with a trace of a few other alloys but its very clean steel. The 2% silica makes up for the difference for the lower carbon content. By what I can tell by checking with a file it gets harder than the 5160 that I do. Have you tired the claro for handles yet? I'm sure you got some scraps.

Bruce, Here's the play by play as well as I can remember it. I do file the groves then I'll do a quick buff with a plastic compound and then etch. Steel wool inbetween etches and when I'm done with that I cold blue and steel wool one more time. Hope that answers you questions.....

They're a lot more beautiful than the Metro !I remember as a kid , watching a woman trying to parallel park a Metro in a spot about three times the length of the car - it took her about 15 minutes !!! America's early attempt at a subcompact.....There are standard silicon spring steels such as 9255 but maybe in England they have one with only .40 C.

I'd never let the wife control my money or hers  The lights wouldn't even work any longer for one thing  and that means no grinding :grumpy:

Ray is that silica or silicon?
I was thinking silica was what glass was made from
 is it hard as glass Ray  :)

damn Smillies are moving around again :grumpy:

Dan, I only know about half of what I'm talking about. Its one of the two but I'll have to go with what Mete says. Your probably right about the glass. Ok, now one of the reasons I didn't say silicon is because I see it used with a last name of Caulk.

Mete, on the steel when I got it analized I sent it to a friend in Germany. It came back with some strange number. I'll see if I still have the results. If I do I'll post it...

I know what you mean Ray
also sounds like something some woman have had a problems with too  and a lot softer than Steel
too: I think that spelling is a little off too adding a silicon to silicone?

editing before anyone has a field day with that
I'm talking about silicon or silicone implants is that the same stuff

Dan: Your lights are on but you haven't been home for years. :p :D

Goodness Ray. I went out of town and when I come back you are still cranking them out.
They are beautiful. Good design and clean lines and your handle design seems to go with everything.

Your going to be able to retire soon! :p
