I had two knives to arrive yesterday. These were ordered from AG Russell. One is the Browning Barker/Crowell Competition Cutter, and the other is the Texas Ranger 2010 folder.
I had the Browning right after they came out and found it to be quite a good knife. It is a large chopper of 1/4" carbon steel, that to my knowledge, is 5160. The new one I recieved is also very nice. I don't remember the first one having a tapered tang, but it may have. The edge looks to be a convex edge, and again, I don't remember the earlier one having this type edge. The edge is VERY sharp. The leather sheath is a simple affair, well made, and an exact fit for the knife.
The second knife is the Texas Ranger 2010 Commemrative. This is a large equal end Sunfish pattern, with a locking blade. This is one heavy knife at 10+ ounces. It is carried in a black leather sheath that is well built, and a design from Bob Dozier. This knife is made in China and AG has picked the builder well as it is really well built with excellent fit/finish! The bolsters, and liners are made from stainless steel that has a nice satin finish. The blade is from 8Cr15MoV, and is .233" thick. It has good grinds that are even on both sides, with the edge being razor sharp from the box. It has a deep opening notch that allows one hand opening. The blade opening is very smooth and it uses a coil spring for the lock that makes opening easier, so one handed opening is easy to accomplish. Grips are from Ebony Linen Rucarta, which I believe is an exclusive handle material of AG Russell, and inset with a Texas Ranger medallion.
This is an extremely nice, well built, knife and I regret missing out on the first two models, though they are available in plain dress.
Thanks AG for a very nice design!!
