It's probably been asked before but I haven't seen a similar thread and it seemed like a particularly good topic . . .
Who does this :
Do you have a knife model that you like so much that you have one for work as a beater and another for at home or to carry on your days off when you want a cleaner/well cared for knife ?

I'll start. As close as I come I guess is I carry a walnut brown bone Case Trapper at work and a white Sparex handled Case Trapper for a clean machine.
I just love this knife and have a couple of others.

I don't really have one for a beater and one for good or weekends ... but I do own several knives that I liked so much I have duplicates ... most of the time one or more are put back for later use but I have on a few occasions gotten one out so I had a nice looking knife yes.

I don't think I have two users of the same knife, and if I did, it would likely be the new Lion Steel Euro Barlow.
The only reason I would get another would be to opt for a second handle material and have a "reserve", even though I don't often keep safe queens, so it would be rotated into the rotation in the fashion you state above.

Pics of my only one:

I opted for the Rams Horn, since I didn't own a knife in the cover material. They also have Palo Santo (wood), Carbon Fiber, Abalone, and Stag.

M390 @ 60-61hrc, Ti liners and bolsters, stainless back spring, screwed on slabs and bolsters allow for easy cleaning and modification, while a pinned inner construction and a screw based pivot allows for the factory settings to be maintained over years of use...

I sort of do that with a couple. My GB1 and 940 could be considered day carry with my GB2 and 940-1 serving as evening carry.
These are the ones I carry when "beating" on stuff.:)

I will occasionally carry something larger and something smaller. A zt 0350 or 0620 and a Spyderco delica or zt 0450.

I carry a Sage I for chores and when it's time to clean up and go out somewhere, I grab her sister, Miss Sage II.
I'm not rich or fancy, but I do LOVE them both.

I tend to carry nicer knives when I am not working or in the shop.

Example, I carry the ivory Davison to church and nice fictions:

But when in the shop, I may carry the case bose cattle knife or a Davison in a bit less dressy slab material:

When there's a model I really like and the maker offers several variations, I'll often end up with a few of them. For instance, I EDC Delicas and Enduras quite often and have several of each (G-10 handles, waved, FFG, etc.).

In my SAK collection I've got duplicates of hard to find ones, I keep one NIB and use the other one. I've got three or four of the models I use the most because I frequently give them away as gifts to people who keep asking to borrow them.

This doesn't exactly fit as technically they're different models but I do have multiple sets of larger and smaller that I use in such a way.

One that stands out (a current favorite pair) are my Bradford Guardians, I often take my 4 to work and then swap to a 3 when I get home / on the weekends. I'm even debating the folding version for dress up occasions

Yes as a farmer my work knife gets abused like no blade should. My work knife is a CRKT M16-14SFG (One tough SOB). I have a handful of Spydercos that I rotate through when I'm not working. My Yojimbo, Southard and K2 get the most pocket time.

As far as duplicates go, I have three Dragonfly 2s. One was my original that I lost in storage for two and a half years and recently found, one is a black FRN that I replaced it with, and my "nice" one is a modded G-10 that I like to carry in the office or similar environments.

In other cases, I have my Manix 2, ZT0450, PM2, and Native 5 strictly for work environments, and never carried when I'm just going about my day. My usual EDC is my Kizer Feist, Delica 4, or Swick 3.

Being a white collar sorta guy, my nice knives are the weekeday carry at the office. Mostly traditionals, or sleek and unassuming knives like a Kershaw Leek or SAK Alox.

My weekends are the days where I get my hands dirty with landscaping and household projects. For those jobs, the PM2 usually gets the nod.

well, I've got 3 user Pacific Salts and 2 backups, and 1 user Spyderhawk and 1 backup. I thought of keeping 1 Tasman as user and 1 as backup but it's so nice of a work blade that I put both into the EDC rotation :D

I do HVAC work so any knives used at work, Pac Salt SE, HOB Link, G10 Manix and a few others get beat up badly.
I always have one of them with me at work along with something nice, Pro Tech auto, Helix Nano, 940 to fondle and play with.
I don't have a pair with one to trash and one to save though.

If you really like a knife and like using it, I see no reason not to have a duplicate backup or one that you might use only occasionally. I especially do this with Vic SAKs because I use them and occasionally I will mess one up. Loosing/leaving it lie somewhere/misplacing it are the more likely cause of replacing it however for me rather than breaking it.

I have "Users" and "Keepers."

The "Keepers" can best be described as duplicates that sit in the safe while the twin bother/sister gets the pocket time and the use. Some of my very favorites have back-ups for the back-ups. This practice has actually been beneficial when one or more of my favorites gets discontinued, as was the case with the beloved Becker BK-15.

Should have bought another BK-15 when they went at discounted prices a year ago. But I have other similar knives and life goes on.
