Two of my favorite things...Traditionals and reloading

Dave,

I am not a bit surprised that a guy who likes traditional knives is also a fervent reloader. I know I enjoy reloading too. Has a lot in common to be honest although the uninitiated would not think so. I have rolled my own rifle rounds for all my hunting purposes for years now. And all of my friends as well. It is a fun thing to dial in a rifle and figure out what it likes.

So how does it resemble knife collecting? Think about all the experimenting you can do with different powders and bullets and whatnot. And you get to do all of it over again if you trade or buy a different rifle or handgun. It never ends. I found what my 06 and 08 like and have enough supplies to keep myself in hunting rounds for a long, long time. Wish I had the opportunity to shoot as much as I used to. Be a while before I have to load up anything new.

Over an ounce of lead traveling 1260fps in a 5 1/5" barrel? That is impressive.

Surprisingly mild compared to my favorite .454 load. I have a custom 340gr WLFN bullet that I put on top of 30 gr or H110. I get over 1600fps out of a 4 3/4 inch barrelled FA Premier Grade.

That's a thumper. I've been itching for one of his Bisley Makeovers. Not sure if I'd really want to go more than .45 Colt.

How about some pics of the Bisley? With a traditional knife of course!

Ill post some pics of my .500 Linebaugh by John and I have a .475 LB built on a Bisely by Jack Huntington with faux ivory grips. Its a really thumper too!

Cool. As a side note, my Mountain Gun is about to sell on an auction site. I'm planing on replacing it with a Ruger Bisley in .45 Colt. Maybe one day I can send it to Linebaugh for a work over.

So, the .500 Linebaugh is mild? :o

You're gonna give me a complex about my bear gun! I can hear my .41 Magnum pouting.

I just finished reading about Dick Proenneke who toted a .357 Mag when it wasn't his .30-06.

I'm not sure what I think about last line bear protection. On one hand, I'm not sure any handgun (magnums and up) is all that much more effective on a charging bear. I think you need a CNS hit and shot placement is king. On the other hand, bears have thick bones and skulls. So, as long as it penetrates and you put the shot in the right spot.... do you need much more than a hot .357 Mag with a hard cast bullet? Dave can you fill us in some more?

Mild may not be the word, just more push than violent jerk like the .454. Both require full attention not to catch a sight in the forehead. I know that on the days where I shot about 100-150 .454 loads vs days I did the same with the .500 my wrist was more sore with the .454. With my little .454. I always likened my favorite load to taking a full power swing at a metal light pole with an aluminum bat.

As far as bear loads you are right you want a good placement on the CNS to stop a big ol bear. I have read that a .357 has killed many a bear especially when the shooter had the presence of mind to put the bullet in the brain pan. I like to carry as much gun as I can shoot accurately quickly. I can usually do 2 inch groups with my .500 at 50 yards on a good day. Breaking a front shoulder helps too. At the end of the day though, its always best to have a 12 guage with slugs. Much easier to put many rounds in a small group compared to a handgun.

I'm with you on shot placement Call. Before I picked up my .41, I carried a S&W 686+ (7 shot DA in .357 for those unfamiliar) for bear country, although I will say I did feel a bit underpowered there.
Dick Proenneke is probably the most impressive human I have ever seen, he could probably carry a .22 in bear country and make it out alive.

If you haven't, you should read his book. He talks about two bear encounters that were pretty intense. No shots were fired though. You'll definitely think about it though.

While we have black bears down this way, I have yet to see one in person. Did see one from a trail camera that was set up in an area I was hiking in though.

We've got brown here, fortunate enough to only encounter a lot of scat and a few from a distance. Got a little too close for comfort in Alaska's interior once, didn't much care for it!
I haven't read his book, I'm gonna have to pick that up. Watching him work a double bit is impressive (there, token knife related content, sorry if we're getting off track).
I've got to run, real good talkin to you guys.

Last time I was able to re-load anything was 1984 :(

I just got on after reloading 45 Colt ammo this afternoon.

You can load em up pretty hot on a Ruger. I have a Freedom Arms cast bullet that I load up. Its a gas check LFN that goes a little over 300gr. I was getting about 1200fps with that out of my old Bisely that I wish I still had.

The loads pictured above are 315 gr GCs over Accurate 4100 powder for about 1170 fps. The trigger guard just kisses my middle finger in recoil. Any more velocity and they get uncomfortable.

As long as the gun likes the load, no need for more velocity. Makes a 44mag jealous.

Thats a beast of a round, hopefully the first shot is on target, I bet that thing kicks like a mule, I thought my .45 colt had a good kick

Beauty Dave. I think one of the best things Ruger could do to that gun to improve it's looks is drop the scroll marks.

They way commercial ammo is doing, reloading is about the only way to shoot currently.

Guys, I don't think I am stepping on the Trad. Moderators toes to say here. "Always try to make a thread have photos that at least have a knife in the photo or mention knives frequently during the discussion of the guns." I just think if we all try to do that we will never receive the 'ire' of a tormented super duper top of the heap moderator. Unlike me which hovers near bottom and is a gun and knife person.......300
