1.) I was looking to purchase some steel from Texas Knifemaking supply and found d2 tool steel and cmp d2. The cmp d2 was much more expensive. What is the differance?

2.) Can someone post some links to heat treating services that you have had good experiances with? Looking for a place that is reasonable and can do different steels such as d2, stainless, ect.

Thanks

John

CPM D2 is the Crucible version of D2 made using the CPM process. At a minimum, it has superior quality control.

I have heard good things about TKS' heattreat though I have never use them myself a local maker has used them for many years and is very happy with their results, and I don't know anything about D2 other than is kick a.

I've also heard good things about Texas Knife Supplies heat treatment

As for the CPM steel, here's a quote from Crucible's web site:

CPM high-performance tool and high-speed steels are premier products of Crucible Specialty Metals Division. The process of producing CPM tools involves gas atomization of pre-alloyed molten steel to form powder that is then isostatically compressed into 100% dense compacts. CPM steels have no alloy segregation and exhibit extremely uniform carbide distribution.

This special process creates alloys with unique or enhanced properties that cannot be made by conventional steel manufacturing methods. In almost any application, CPM grades offer improved wear-resistance, toughness and grindability.

In addition, CPM tool steel carbides are extremely fine and uniformly distributed, resulting in superior grinding and heat-treating characteristics. Benefits for the tool user include improved tool performance and ease of regrinding.

That's what I was going to say !! The CPM process has been around for years .While more expensive it is better for both maker and user. There are some very nice blade CPM steels such as S30V, CPM D2 and CPM154.

I guess it will polish much better than normal D2 too. If I had a supply I would throw away my D2 stock and go for CPM D2....

I've never used TKS for heat treating, so can't speak of their work.

All of the blades I have sent out for heat treatment have gone to Paul Bos. His work is excellent and I highly recomend his services. Each blade he treats is individually checked for hardness (Rc) to your specs. I don't think TKS offers this individual Rc check.
