Hello,

thanks in advance for your replies.

Here are my two questions:
1) I am about to receive my first Spyderco Mule. I need some handles for it.
According to my research, the only company that makes any is Halpern Titanium. I emailed them about availability and price, but got no answer (in 2 weeks).
Does anyone know where I can get these handles (or even other handles, if anyone makes any for the Mule) and how much they cost?
2) I saw in the Spyderco 2011 catalog that they have a bunch of new variations for the Para 2. I also am aware that the regular Para 2 is on backorder everywhere and Spyderco will most likely fill the orders for that one first. I am interested in a Para 2 with Digicam handles and non coated blade.
How long do you think it will be before Spyderco finally manages to start production on the other Para 2 models?

Thanks again!

part of the fun of the Mule team knives is the ability to add scales in a multitude of different patterns and styles....try your hand at making your own or para-cord wrap it. If that is not a option I know (and am am) a knife modifier that could make you pretty much whatever you can imagine for your mule.

Try emailing Tom Krein here on the forums.

He made the scales and kydex for me pictured below.

I got hold of halpern on the phone first try.

My sarcasm detector is not broken and it's beeping furiously now. I just hope I misunderstood your intentions. Unfortunately, I don't think I did.

I try to always be civilised in life and I will try here as well.

So...re your comment...not that you need to know, but in any case here it goes...I like to do my business stuff via email, because I like to HAVE A PAPER TRAIL. That's why I normally don't call people, unless it's a last ditch effort. I had too many instances in the past where people for whatever reason didn't do what they said they would. That caused me problems as they simply said they had no trace of what I had told them. Hence, as I said, I use email, which by the way it's one of the methods that Halpern suggests for contacting them about these scales.

Furthermore, I can't quite understand if you spoke to them, why you can't just say something like "I spoke to them, yes their scales are available now and their price starts at $XYZ" or "I spoke to them and the scales are not available as of now". You know, anything with a bit of information in it: after all that's all I asked. Not something like pick up a phone and call them.
I still don't understand why you are trying to be rude with me. I don't know you. I have never done anything wrong to you. So please don't play this game with me, ok? Thanks.

PS: I hope that the rest of your 1400 posts are not of the trolling kind, you'd be wasting your time.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately it's not an option for me (=to make them myself). Would it be ok for you to send me some info on how to contact this individual? I still would like to see if Halpern has some, but I'd like to keep all my options intact.

Wow Rob, those are beautiful!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I'll try to contact him. Thanks SO much for the info!

Legion,

I have dealt with Melanie over at Halpern twice. Both times she was very nice and professional. I initiated contact over the phone and subsequently had emails to track...I will be buying from them again.

That said, I don't think that Halpern is a giant company and people do sometimes take big chunks of time off during the holidays. So I would gently suggest a phone call over there to remind someone to check the sales@ mailbox.

I've seen photos of Tom Krein's work also and it's top notch, but you might have a bit of a wait as his work is in big demand. I'm drooling over his Dogfish neck knife.

Thank you Jason, I very much appreciate your info.

I am thinking, seen that I am located "only" some 90 miles away from them, to pay them a visit if they have as well a retail store at their shop.

I didn't know they were a smallish shop, in that case and seen that in your experience they also provided some paper trail, I might be better off calling them first. Thanks for the advice!

Al,

I would not presume, actually, to declare their entire business as small, but I suspect that the Mule-Team-handle end of it isn't that large. It can't be, given that it's always a limited run of blades...so, more like a labor of love. Like Sal's blades, you can tell they care.

I don't think that anyone attempted sarcasm or being uncivilized, merely stating a common shared fact amongst the knife world. That is quite a stretch there. Mosty places will answer email when the real life interactions are completed, if at all. Most times I've called a place, I get to speak with a real human being. That is worth a lot to some people, especially in a society as disconnected as ours has become. Papertrail requisite aside, it was only to try and provide another option. I mean, they are knife handles, nothing more. Enjoy the forum, good luck with your Mule knives, I hope you enjoy them ;) Lighten up a bit.

I didn't get sarcasm either. I thought the guy was just telling you that they are more likely to answer the phone than an email. I think you might have over reacted just a bit.

To address your other question: lots of folks are begging for the answer to that question, but nobody seems to be talking. I think Spydero is selling them as fast as they can put them together!

Good God, Man!

All he said was that he called them on the telephone and that they answered it.

Oh I am in a very upbeat mood, it's Xmas who wouldn't be? No need to lighten up even more, I am already at my maximum point. :)
But that does not mean that I will let anyone have a cheap shot at me just for their fun...

I know you mean well, but that individual wasn't trying to "provide another option".
Why? Because:
1) I, like everyone in the civilised world, know of the existance of phones and their use. I sure don't need a reminder from "bigbcustom" for that...
2) That individual, rather than thinking that I might have my reason(s) for not using a phone (<-- see paper trail. The road to failure is paved with good intentions. A nice written thing will prevent that many times), chose to tell me to use a phone.
In itself, WITHOUT EXTRA information attached to it, it's already a waste (how could I NOT know that it's an option? Come on). But if you add to that that instead of saying it in a normal polite way (was a "In my experience, Halpern addresses this kind of inquiries via phone in a more efficient way. I think it's the best way for you to get the information you are seeking" so difficult to write?), he decided to say it via a "They answered the phone on my first try", which to me sounds like a "Duh, call them by phone, dummy".
And you tell me there was no rudeness and no sarcasm? Right.
That's not the way you talk to people. It's no good manners for sure.

I had many, many replies with lots of useful information (though it's peculiar that no one has yet to give a ballpark range of the cost of their scales. It's very strange to me...). I TOTALLY fail to see the one-liner from that person as anything useful.

Pete,

I know phones exist and people use them, it's been like that for a century and a half or something like that.
I know Halpern has a phone number. I know that if Halpern has a phone number and you call it, someone will answer it. That's what happens with phones, it's no ground breaking news.
I need not have this guy telling me the obvious. And guess what? He wasn't trying to tell me the UTTERLY obvious in order to give me some precious piece of information. He was being patronizing, sarcastic and rude. Do you understand?

I asked for news/info concerning the availability of Halpern scales and their price range .
NOT how Halpern manages their phone calls.

Allright, I am leaving this thread after this reply to you. It's obvious that what I consider impolite/sarcastic is not what the rest of the world seems to think (excepted for my wife. I told her en passant of this and her reply was "classic. What do you expect from a public forum in Internet?") and I just don't want to waste further time repeating the same concepts over and over, it would be ridiculous.

This is what I think ISN'T a rude and sarcastic reply to me:
"If I was in your shoes, I'd try calling them by phone as in my personal experience, I had the best success with it"
This is what I am SURE it's a rude and sarcastic reply:
"Pick up the phone and call them, dummy"
This is what I am sure at 99.9999% that it's a rude and sarcastic reply that someone tried to slightly conceal:
"They answered my phone call on my first try"

Finally, if you don't have an answer to someone's question (for the love of God, I am not asking if they have phones and are they answering them, I am asking for AVAILABILITY and PRICE RANGE!), I believe you should not answer.
If you do have an answer to someone's question and you answer, it's a good deed you just did. Shared your knowledge, you know.
If you do or do not have an answer to someone's question and just tell them the obvious, in a sarcastic/rude way, you are being an <insert whatever
insult you might find appropriate here>.

Merry Xmas to all.

PS: thanks for trying to answer my #2 question!

MODS PLEASE CLOSE THIS THREAD.

I needed some info, got whatever I needed. Anything else could lead this thread to degenerate and I have no interest in that.

PEACE OUT, Merry Christmas to all and best of luck.

In before the lock...

Option 1 and 3: $20
Option 4: $40

Hardware included and shipping in the US is $5.

Halpern's website isn't exactly informative as far as ordering Mule scales, so I can see why a poster said to call them. Maybe he had a cell phone using a data connection to quickly and efficiently answer your question. I think you got a little bent out of shape. :barf: A little more research by you (you mentioned researching) would have produced your answers. I provided your answer and it took me all of 30 seconds searching the forum.
