The handle on that Jange is absolutely gorgeous! Anyone have any idea what kind of wood that is?

Jeremy I sort of suspect it may be Osage Orange but due to the quality of the pic I can't swear to it. UB said it was a nasty day in Reno when he took the pix so he had to do it inside under artificial light, not the best for taking decent pix.
Maybe when the new owner gets it we may get some good pix and then determine what it is for sure. It sort of has an Ash like grain but then Osage does too, Sorry.

 Thanks Yvsa! I trust your best guess much more than my own. :) I don't work with wood much, and when I do I'm usually staining a cheaper wood to look like a more expensive one. I did just get my first "virgin" wood-handled khuk (18" Kumar Sirupati from the last "Yandu's deals" post on 10/14), so I'll get to work with some satisaal.

Got the Jange today, what a beaut. I never really looked at them before this special, but now I'm kicking myself because of the similarity to my 20" WWII-villager that is one of my favorites. It looks beefy and it balanced farther forward than most of my khuks, a real chopper. By FAR it is the sharpest khuk I have received, almost shaving, very good edge. As I hadn't paid attention before, I was surprised to find no buttcap and hidden tang, so I'll just have to trust its strength. Perhaps I can put something decorative on the plain open butt, as someone mentioned in another jange thread. It does have steel or white metal bolster, which I like. The handle is fairly short (a true one-hander compared to the longer one on my 20" villager) but beefy around, very comfy and just feels traditional.

The handle itself is a very interesting wood, could be the osage orange but it is much less orange than the recent YCS handle and has some darker spots. Up near the bolster it is almost greenish. Very well done, and the k&c may be the blood sandalwood.

Niice pics...thanks for the followup! I wouldn't worry about the partial tang...I think the kamis know what they are doing!

With your pic mPisi it looks like plain ol' Saatisal which is a damned good wood for a khuk handle.:D Lotsa difference in what lighting does ainnit?;)

Edit:
If you're afraid of the partial tang the solution is easy. Simply get a good 1/8" steel cutting drill bit and drill a 1/8" hole in the center about a 1/2" up from the bolster side to side and put in a piece of 1/8" brass welding rod with maybe .015" or 1/64", the same, sticking out on both sides and gently peen both sides over. It will hang fer a milliennium!!!!:D  :D
