... and not worry about:

Something old and something new. Throw a pack of matches in your pocket and you're ready to go!

Preaching to the choir here.

For many years now there's been a pocket knife and a AAA flashlight in my right front pocket. Being a pipe smoker, theres one Bic lighter in my other pocket and another Bic in my daypack.

Back in the day it was said a gentleman always has a pocket knife and a handkerchief on him. I preffer two bandanas. :)

Nice!
That's the same two items I always have with me....everything else is situational and expendable to some degree....well I guess the light can always be replaced with flint and steel.....

Here is some EDC bliss.....

There is an old saying over here which may or may not have connections to the Scout movement, I can't seem to find out for certain. It goes like this:

You should always carry a knife, a piece of string, and a coin.
Then you can Cut, Tie, and Buy

My Grandfather taught me this, too.

I took it to heart and always have a pocket knife and a bandana. I also carry a Jetbeam Mk II or a Fenix Dart.

Grandpa would have carried a tiny LED lite if they'd been around in his day, I'm sure.

Guys, even when I'm buck nekkid, I still have my Arc AAA and my Spyderco Titanium Mini-Policenecklace knife are always with me.:D

I always carry a pocketknife, but nothing else. I've started to carry a bandana, and I'm thinking about carrying a disposable Bic, as smokers tell me they are pretty much indestructible and reliable.

My EDC is an early-80s vintage Victorinox Pioneer, and a keyring on which there's a Vic Rambler, a Peanut Lighter, and an LED light. The keyring is one of Countycomm's aircraft cable ones. Countycomm was also the source for the lighter and light.

By the way, Jackknife, any helpful suggestions or stories on the use of a bandana for the different chores we may come across?

Second on that, I'm sure you have some good ones Jackknife.

A bandana is probably the most usefull bit of gear you can carry for such light weight.

They make a handy container if you suddenly find yourself with a handfull of small objects with no container, like a handfull of cartridges, some nuts and bolts, large amount of change. Or a handfull of pipe tobacco a friend is giving you out of his humidor to take home and try.

I've used one as a cooling device on a hot day out in the boat. dip it over the side and tie it on your head pirate style and let evaporation do its job.

Used in a similar way it has kept my ears frome freezing when I was out on an unexpectedly long time in bad weather. I folded it into a triangle and tied it around my head, again pirate fashion, with the material over my ears, then put my ball cap on over it. That layer of cotton kept my ears safe from the cold snow that was comming down, and the extra layer of doubled over material under the hat kept my head a bit warmer.

It makes a decent presure bandage in a pinch.

Rolled up in a tight band it can be used to tie something together, like the time a set of car keys got dropped through a storm sewer grate. We could see the keys about 6 feet down. A long branch was cut from a nearby tree, part of it out at the tip was bent over and broken and then tied at a 45 degree angle so the keyring could be "hooked".

In a pinch you can cut it into long strips to make a long something to tie something else, like splints on a suspected broken limb.

Folded up in 4's it makes a passable pot holder to get the coffee pot off the fire.

Working on some things when doing house projects it's made a decent dust mask, keeping the spackle dust out of my lungs.

A million and one things.

if you absolutely have to, you can always wipe your nose with it.:D

I always keep two on me. One is folded into 4's and then rolled up and placed along the outside of my right hand pocket. This keeps you pocket knife and AAA flashlight standing up in the front part of your pocket more comfortably. The other is folded up and goes in my back right pocket for "just in case".

Once you carry one for a while, you'll never be without one.

Count me in, too - I always have a bandanna, pocketknife, and Arc AAA.

Y'all realize we're all rather anachronistic, right?

James

There are four things that I usually carry on me. Two knives, a compass/whistle combo and a fire steel. The fire steel isn't in the pic. I dropped the keys yesterday and it broke. Got to get a new one.

I always have a knife in my pocket and a Photon on my keyring.

Same here. Those Photons and other micro LED lights are the best thing since sliced bread. Most times I have either a folder and my Leatherman Micra, or a SAK. Gotta have a civilized way to open beers! :D

Since the LED I had on my keychain died I've been without a light. While at the market the other day I bought a refillable butane lighter that has a little LED on the bottom. So now I have a light and a light.

I carry either two folders, or a folder and a fixed, and a zippo, my keys, some change and a bandana (I'd forgot about it until jackknife mentioned it - oh right I carry one too, about the only thing that you can get on an airplane with.)

and some other stuff in my jacket.

jackknife, have you ever considered a silk bandana or, uummmh, masculine-looking scarf? ;) It would do everything as well as your cotton bandana, but keep your ears warmer in winter, your head cooler in summer, and fold down smaller in your pocket.

That said, I always carry a white handkerchief in my pocket. Grandpa taught me a gentleman always carries a pocketknife and handkerchief. I try to convince myself I am such by doing as he did. :D

Left front pocket: white handkerchief and cell phone

Left rear pocket: wallet (minimalist, sailcloth "All-ette")

Right front pocket: keychain with house & car keys, Sears coin screwdriver & Arc-AAA

Right rear pocket: empty now that I no longer carry a liner-lock with a clip.

Alway have the above. If I don't have it, I don't need it.

If I go into the woods, even briefly I add three things: 1) string (thanks, jackknife), 2) AMK Spark Lite 3) four fire tinders.

Simple, light, small, everything gets used.

No, not really, as my favorite winter hat is my real Navy surplus watch cap. i love my wool watch cap, dosent blow off in a wind, fits in a coat pocket when I go inside. But that particular day we had not had planned an outdoor walk, and I was wearing a ball cap to keep the sleet out of my face while running errends. Then the sleet turned to snow and when Karen and I came out of the mall it was so nice looking with the covering of fresh snow we decided on a spur of the moment walk. We both had good coats and boots. So I just made due with what I had. It worked out okay.
