Two things you should always carry...

A pair of pliers, and a knife:

In addition to that:
  • A zippo
  • A bandana
  • A pair of gloves
  • keys
  • a watch
  • another knife or two

Stockman 242 mentioned Zippos.

I used to love Zippos but now i use a Peanut lighter carried on my keychain.
It has an O-ring and doesn't run dry unless you burn it dry.
I filled it a few months ago and its still full and ready to go.

My Zippos used to go dry in a couple of weeks even when they weren't being used.
Also Zippos leak slightly when carried in the pocket which can irritate the skin.
Last off i was using the Zippo Leather belt pouch which worked pretty good.
The pouch seemed to make the fuel last longer.
Maybe close body contact was the culprit, perhaps body heat and the jostling around in the pocket would speed the evaporation of the fuel.
Either way the pouch helped some.

If you insist on using a Zippo buy two or three and swap the mechanisms with the bodies until you find one that fits really tight.
The last one i used had a solid brass body and the chromed mechanism from one of my silver Zippos.
That was the best Zippo i had for fuel retention. I usually got a month out of it before it went dry.

All those reasons are why after 35 years of loyal use, I finally switched to carrying a Bic. Too many times having a burning red patch on my left thigh, too many times it goes dry at an inoportune moment, or the flint goes south and I have to take it apart and replace it with a flint from under the packing, and while doing this out in the woods the fluid is evaporating rapidly. Having to carry spare fuel in a small container.

I hate to say it, but the only time I miss my Zippo is when lighting my pipe out on the water or other windy place. But if I use my hat and light my pipe while holding my hat over it, that works. I'm definatly an ex-Zippo fan. A Bic lasts me about four months of steady edc use, light my pipes, the sented candles Karen is fond of in the house, melting the ends of nylon cord when I have to cut a piece.

What are these peanut lighters you talk of?

It fits on a keychain and is called a peanut, can't be bad. I have a great bias toward little things called peanuts.:)

Alright jk, I know there' a joke in there somewhere. :D

The Peanut is a small waterproof lighter put out by County Comm here:

http://www.countycomm.com/peanutlighter.htm

I have no experience with one, but wouldn't hesitate to spend the $5 to find out, based on my experience with other County Comm products.

Here is a YouTube video of three lighters undergoing a water dunk:

Here you go:

They call it a "spy-capsule lighter" there though.
lol.
A lot of people online call them peanut lighters though.
Peanut sounds more homey and less James-Bondy than "spy-capsule lighter".
In my mind they'll always be Peanuts.
:D
Either way they are great!

I think there are also flat bottomed versions out as well.
:)

Sweetgrits: 3lb sack of cornmeal in a pirex dish @ 350 deg for 15 min, turn off oven leave in for ~1 hr. 1lb sugar., add 2 ingredients put up in tupperware. when you go out take a small tupperware (~1 cup) of it w/ you. the sugar gives it a decent taste, &instant energy, the cornmeal expands (like grits) in your belly. (1 tbsn of mix: 1 cup cold water) stir & drink down.
Bindle: 12'x8' duck w/ at least 2 wool army blankets (4 for winter) fold in 3rds, lay spare clothes in center & roll up.

Your "sweetgrits" sound DISGUSTING do you really eat them?
As to your "bindle", why don't you just buy a sleepng bag, & a backpack?

I love small, powerful flashlights and own several. But I must say, over the course of a year, the number of times I really need a flashlight on my person could be counted on a couple of fingers whereas my knife gets used multiple times per day. So I've stopped carrying a light because it just doesn't earn its pocket real estate. Now I'm not talking about times like when I'm camping and I know I'll want a flashlight on me -- then I make sure I have one. And of course there's one in the car. But as an EDC, I just don't find a need to be able to reach into my pocket at a moment's notice and produce a flashlight. I have however found that a 512 Mb flash drive is real handy on the keyring!

Headsup for those forumites outside the U.S.
County Comm has some nice gear but doesn't sell to us foreign types. lol.
Too bad as they have some cool gear.
Oh well their loss.

However edcdepot.com does sell to those of us outside the U.S.
and they have the peanuts as well.
:)

Yes, I eat them, & I don't need to start a fire neither. You just can eat more than 2 a day (don't ask me how I know this). :o
For the bindle vs sleeping bag, a bindle gives you more layers of insulation, & if 1 gets wet (almost unheard of) you still have the others. In fact we called sleeping bags fart bags since that's all they were good for.;)

The A2 has been replaced by a Fenix P3d RB100, and the Nuwaii Q3 has been replaced by a Fenix P2D CE, otherwise this is what I carry in my pockets and on my belt. More stuff in a jacket or bag when I have one.

Two things I always carry? Blah. How about three? : )
I EDC a Fenix T1 (Got it for my B-day, awesome flashlight - 225 lumens on turbo!), a SOG Flash I (I was carrying a Microtech, but I'd rather not have it confiscated), and flint & steel.
Oh, and a SAK Huntsman & HI JKM-1...
No, not all of this goes in my pockets : )

-David

p.s. If I had to choose between them all, I'd carry my T1, the JKM-1, and my flint&steel.

You carry ALL those knives on your person? Yikes. And I thought I carry a lot... normally on my belt I have a pouch for my folder, sheath for my T1, PDA, wallet for my jumpdrives... and thats it : )

Although I will carry a Ruger .480 at times : D

I always have these two with me. They both get some use at work although the flashlight light actually gets a lot more use then the knife. I would not leave the house without both in my pockets.

For the bandanna fans, there are some interesting ideas here:

.

Thanks for the link. I`ve been seeing some of the furoshiki tie taught on public TV here and wasz trying to think of a way to explain them. But your link has several I hadn`t seen yet. My wife Ryoko always has a scarf-sized furoshiki folded up in her purse. They`re dammned convenient.

Goodness...that's quite a load. Makes me not feel so bad. BTW, what is that on the ASP KD?

I'll probably end up carrying the Skeletool Cx and possibly another Nitecore Defender Infinity (1AA) light when they become (back) available here in the U.S. The Cx seems small/light enough and the NDI is simply the nicest light that I have ever carried next to the M6 Guardian or the old 12ZM (their Edgetac Raidfire Spear is a close 4th).
Hate to admit it....but one can actually now afford a quality knife or high output light; receive factory direct support right up here on the net for it and often times actually be treated like a valued customer...to boot (imagine that).
Hats off to all of the folks out there making it right here in the good 'ol U. S. of A and being rightfully proud of it; yet edc knivs like the Byrds and these first two lights from Edgetac (factory support incl.) seem to be creating some pretty significant inroads into the specialty market. While none of us would question the 'get what you pay for' reasoning surrounding the former; I think that at least a few of us are starting to question just how much that figure should actually be in light of what has been proven many times over just recently (ie: how many forum records for a completely unknown entity were set during the NDI presale on CPF Marketplace?).

I don't know where my Skeletool will be made or where the materials will indeed come from; yet (for now) it appears as if at least one of the "two things that (I) should always carry" will come from overseas...and that should be at least 'comment noted' for a few producers over here in this upcoming economic downturn (as these are obviously two of the few items that we will normally ever wear out).

Guys, even when I'm buck nekkid, I still have my Arc AAA and my Spyderco Titanium Mini-Policenecklace knife are always with me.:D

me too. I have been known to walk around wearing a gunbelt with a BK7, a custom Maglite with strike bezel, and a folder.....

:D

You can always take pilers and flare out the bottom of the insert just a little instead of buying multiple zippos. Zippos weren't meant to work for weeks on end without a refill. I would be surprised if you got even a week of regular use out of it before you start burning up the wick. Good practice is to fill once every few days. Also, it helps if you keep the zippo standing than leaving it resting on its side. Even in a pocket a zippo will sit well. That'll help with the fluid evaporating fast as well as chemical rash.

Still, I guess most people will find carrying a BIC more convenient.
