Two thong holes

I notice that the Busse Mean Street has a thong hole at the butt of the handle and another hole at the front of the handle behind the ricasso. Is this a thong hole? How is it used?

The Fireborn Dragon has this same setup I believe.

I read in an old Fighting Knives magazine article that it was for a D-guard attachment, and maybe it became part of the Busse look?

Or it could be for lashing the knife to various items in survival situations, not my idea of effective, but some advocate it.

The Battle Mistress demo video show Jerry holding a BM without handle scales and some cord routed through both holes on the guard and butt end as added grip security.
