Here is a little question to get you thinking~

If you were making up a mini kit ( An inch diameter tin for example ) and only had room for two tinders to use with a ferro-rod which would they be?

They can be natural or artificial but you will only have a thumbnail sized amount of each and you want the ones that you are most confident can get a fire going regardless of weather.

Let's hear your thoughts. If you are really struggling to pick only two then I'll let you mention a 3rd in reserve place !

I have a mini-Altoids tin that I played with. I keep a Tinder-Quik tab and a peice of charcloth.

Pit buddy, always thinking about the outdoors, I like that . . . .
I just put together 7 Altoid size survival tins together for the local Boy Scout troop for a Secret Santa gift & I put 2 of the Tinder Tabs & a small sliver of fatwood in each one, along with the other usual stuff (wire saw, photon, matches, button compass, fish kit, ranger band, etc.).
My alternate third choice would have to be firestraws. The ones I have made and used seem to take off as soon as a spark hits them. Another item I use but is not really considered "tinder" because it has to be lit to work but will burn just as long are the "trick" birthday candles. You can light one of those, put it in along with your tinder bundle, and it will burn for almost 4-5 minutes before it burns itself out.
Great question, so many choices to pick from. I will bet there will be some on here that a lot of us have not even thought about.
And since this is your thread, does this mean we can look forward to a picture tutorial from youself of you trying out all the suggestions in that beautiful area you live in along with your two other regular "co-stars" . . . ;)
Take care buddy, great thinking thread.
Be safe.

Neo-sporin instead of petrolium jelly cotton balls, and probably those wet fire tinders since they can be snuffed out and used again. I'm not terribly impressed with them, but they would light better than other ones I guess. Great question.

Petro jelly cotton balls and a small piece of pitchwood, maybe preshaved and packed in around the PJ cotton ball.

I'd take a PJCB and a small piece of fatwood. Those are the two I feel most comfortable with.

I knew PJCB's would be popular......I'm suprised some others have not been mentioned though !

Hi pitdog, PB&J and fat wood split up into double thickness of tooth pics.
You can carry about 10 of them in a bundle with a rubber band around then and never know you have them. they are very light in wieght.
I carry that combo everry day.

Difficult to mention anything because of the parameters. If I can have compound things like resin saturated wood or a PJ soaked cotton ball then where does it end. I would be silly to split between two tinders when I can use a compound of cotton wool, PJ, woolly wire, and whatever other accelerants take my whim wrapped up in latex, ... and just pick the one that works best.

Sawdust and wax mixed the other would be some magnesium flakes both those tinders fit the bill for me for small tinders.Might consider dryer lint but would to have everything in order for that initial burn as it can be "flashy" at times and you wouldnt want it to miss the main event of lighting that fire
Good question Pit

Number one is the cottonball/ Vaseline combo. You could use triple antibacterial cream as this is mostly white petroleum jelly aka Vaseline. Guessing fatwood for number 2 but I never add a second tinder to a very small kit.

For me it's the size restriction. I like fatwood but at the size you mention it would be hard for me to manipulate and a thumbnail size wouldn't last very long. My edc consists of a tube of burt's bees lip balm, 3 q-tips and cotton clothes/lint. All over your size limit. Heck I don't even edc PJCB but at the size, that's the only thing I'd be confident with.
