Thought I'd share these. I think they are kind of cool. I got a call from Scott Sawby(www.Sawbycustomknives.com)a few weeks ago, saying my Combat Utilities were almost done. Just received them a couple days ago, and WOW! One has Mike Norris "crazy lace" SS Damascus blade with pre-ban elephant ivory, no pocket clip, and the knife is extra thick! And I mean extra thick! You can see by the photos the difference in size. The second knife is normal thickness with Damasteel SS Damascus blade and pocket clip, ivory micarta handles. I can't begin to say how flawless in fit and finish these knives are. You have to have them in hand to truly appreciate. At this point I'm undertermined as to what I want engraved on the massive bolster of the elephant ivory CU. I don't want to spend over $400 bones, so my options may be limited. Any suggestions would be great. Sorry for the poor photos; best I could do with my phone.

I don't know what your taste in engraving is, but one option is Marian Sawby--who just happens to be Scott's wife. Very nice woman, as you would expect, and great to deal with, espeically when engraving Scott's knives.

Thanks for nice comments. Yes, I considered Marian. Not sure what her prices might be. I was thinking a possible elephant scene to go with this knife. She does a lot of flower type engraving which I don't really want. That's not say that she couldn't do something else. She's apparently very talented!

Those are beautiful knives. I really like Sawby's Combat Utility pattern and his self lock is easy to use and seems to be pretty robust.

Scott Sawby is going to be one of those makers we all wish we had bought more of one day soon. I had the honor of dining with a large group of fine folks, one of which was Joe Kious. Joe had the best things to say about Scott and his work. He noted in particular how Scott's ideas are his own and he is such an original, innovative, and precise maker.

You have a very sound investment there. In my opinion, Scott is likely to retire in the next few years. I think that this combined with a hopefully recovering economy will make his values soar. His unique locking mechanisms certainly help his values as well.

Don't feel like you have to have them engraved...my favorite Sawbys are those that aren't engraved at all, and I have seen more than a few Sawbys afflicted by the wrong engraving. However, if you decide to have them engraved, Marian could do a great job for you.

pins and dovetailing! Yes, it can be done:D
Very finely crafted tool, there.

Beautiful pieces from one of my favorite makers. Good luck with your engraving
but at $400.00 you're going to be very limited. Using Marian makes a lot of sense to me.

Both are beautiful knives. Congratulations.

Marian Sawby is VERY talented and can probably do anything you want, but the $400 limit may restrict what is possible. Those bolsters look to be fairly large canvases for engraving.

As has been mentioned, no engraving, is preferred by many, to engraving that doesn't enhance the beauty of the object.

Very well put. I'm kind of leaning towards the former too; at least for the moment. The Damasteel knife is actually going to a friend of mine. What he does with it is entirely up to him. He being a fledgling forger and knife maker, he has also been schooled by top engraver Joe Rundell. I may wait and see what he does with his before I jump. Thanks to Scott again for these two beauties. Man I'm trying to bring myself NOT to use mine.
 ;)

CONGRATS on the CU's!! Those are awesome!! Yeah, 2 years IS worth the wait.

I think that they look great just as they are.

Well, I'd carry it with me if I were you. That is the coolest thing about being into collecting knives....you can take one or two with you at all times (most times). That was not really possible with guitars or guns....other obsessions some of us have.

Now, I'll admit that I couldn't bring myself to cut up anything major with that beauty.

Most important...if someone says "Can I use your knife". Say, "Hell no". :) I once handed a damascus blade to a guy and looked over a few minutes later....he was trying to cut wire with it! People don't seem to understand the value of a fine knife....thank goodness he wasn't prying with it.

Carry the Sawby in one pocket and a superknife with a replaceable razor blade in the other. You are all set.

Oh, Don't let anyone find you staring at the Sawby and calling it "My Precious"

I am waiting for UPS to deliver mine today. I had kind of forgotten that I was on his list, until he called me wondering what I wanted. I'm getting a 'regular' one, with desert ironwood, pocket clip, and CPM154 steel.
If you go to his site you'll notice that the CU is not on it anymore.

Those are stunning blades. I love Scott's work, and especially his locking mechanisms. Good idea, getting two at a time. One for show, and one for go!

How can you NOT carry that knife!!

I have a CU too, and it is great to carry and use.

I am on Scott's list for another CU. The fist one I bought from a dealer. I just love it. So, I HAD to contact Scott and get on his list. I think it is 4 years now. Since I have the on CU, and even if I didn't, it IS worth the wait.
