Looking at any and all ways to tie lanyards and fobs. I have made a few, similar to the CRK lanyard, just not as pretty, works for me. I tried my hand at the circle and square lanyards, did one for my keychain last night, it looks bad:barf:, but it does its job. On my big fixed blades, I tie a simple knot, and loop the cord around my hands when using. For folders and smaller fixed blades, however, I am looking for just fobs/lanyards for easier access. Realistically, for the circle and square lanyards, the individual strands need to be removed, but for my bc knives, I would like to leave that if possible. I have checked out several sites online, and have a basic understanding.

I'm not sure whether you are asking how to make those fobs, so let me: Anyone have a tutorial on how to make them? I know they only cost 5 or 6 bucks but we all have 550 cord laying around, might as well make our own.

You can find quite a few places on the web, but the one I enjoy the most has been Stormdrane's blog. You can look at past posts and see what he has done and get links to tutorials for different knots. He is a very good resource. Try this link http://stormdrane.blogspot.com/.

two very important books, both will give you a lot more than just lanyard stuff, and will get you doing crazy things like making rope ladders out of paracord for your kids.......

The rigger's apprentice, by brion toss

The marlinspike sailor (a dover book)

It may seem like an odd answer, but trust me. at least grab the second one, though Brion has a really nice lanyard step by step chapter.

How dare you MAKE stuff!?!?!

:D

Actually, you'd be surprised how often i get that reaction. I'm either a japanese saint, a tactical killer robot, or a menace to society, depending on how the sheep is programmed, to half the people I get introduced to.

Do you do watchbands?

Koyote,

I am sure I could - give a good depth inbetween the pin and the watch bezel to fit the 550 cord. Unless you didn't mind gutted 550 cord - it get very thin when you pull out the lines from the inside.

I have found this site (LightHound.com) to have some of the best instructions for round and square lanyard fobs. I use a square fob about four inches long on my SAK, made from gutted paracord.

For my chopper though, I like a single-strand braid lanyard that I loop through the lanyard hole in a somewhat complicated manner that makes it easy to untie or adjust as needed, so if need be, the paracord is always handy. The reason I use a single-strand braid is two-fold: first, it's a lot more comfortable on my hand and doesn't cut into my hand like a lone cord would. Second, if I need to use the paracord in the lanyard, there's more than three times the length, so I might be able to cut enough off to use as a lanyard while still having enough for whatever I needed it for, or if not, I've got a lot more to work with.

Basically, I take the two ends of the lanyard, make a bight, push the bight through the lanyard hole from the right side (or left if you're left-handed), then bring the ends around outside the lanyard hole (around the butt of the knife) and run them through the bight, pull it tight and adjust as needed, then tie a stopper knot with the ends. This leaves the two ends free, I usually have 3"-4" hanging loose. Hasn't caused me any problems yet. This setup lets the lanyard rest against the base of my hand comfortably as it goes across the back of my hand with my thumb through the loop, without having to come around the butt of the knife.

I hope that wasn't too hard to understand, I'll try to get some pics up if anyone needs them/is interested.

I don't know if this is what you're looking for or (k)not  but it is unstripped 550 and by untying the last loop, the rest comes apart like a daisy chain.

Thanks DOC. Even a cordage-ly challenged person like me can figure this out. I'm kind of a savant when it comes to stuff like this.

Hey Doc do you mind posting pics of how you finish the end? I would really appreciate it.

No big secret - on the last loop when pulling the loop out, pull it all the way through, including the end and snug up the ends- that's it!

When you want to unravel it, pull the end (that you pulled all the way through) back through the loop and pull both ends to unravel.
