Does anyone know where i can buy the light weight type 23 fire brick in iowa (specifically) Des Moines if possible? I have talked to most of the brick suppliers and they keep trying to sell me the hard dense ones cause they don't have a clue what i'm talking about with these type 23. Or maybe someone can send me a link to where i should buy them online at a good price?

refractory.elliscustomknifeworks.com waynecoeartistblacksmith.com . I have ordered from both and they are good people.

yeah was about to search pottery stores here. Are they actually called Type 23? or is there another name for them?

Type 23 refers to them being rated up to 2300 degrees F; they are soft fire bricks (what the local store knew them as). I purchased mine from a local Harbison-Walker (also had satanite, inswool, etc...). I know they have locations across the county and it looks like they have one in Davenport, IA.

thank you, i called some pottery places here and of course they didn't know what i was talking about. So i will contact Harbison

i just got off the phone with Harbison-Walker in Davenport, Iowa and they have them, pricing is $2.56 each only sell in carton of 10 which is $25.60 for 10ct. So therefore i will be headed to Davenport next friday to get them.. Hey thanks guys for the resources to help me find these..

Basically, none of the brick or stone places in town have them. The tractor stores don't either.
A guy in Kansas City has 2000 of them posted on craigslist. I e-mailed asking if he'd be willing to sell just 100 of them. If he does, I'd split them with you.

By the way, if the deal with zaph doesn't work out and you do go to Harbison-Walker play nice with the sales rep that helps you out. I came away with a giant garbage sack of inswool that they had. He called it scrap but the bag was filled with neatly cut 1" thick 12"x12" squares - more than enough to line my oven.

Normally, I'd have no problem bugging Dave to let us come over and use his kiln, but I'm swamped trying to get a Chump Car ready for the race at Newton next weekend. When is your friend shipping out?

i beleive in the middle of next month. I gotta get these brick anyway i have all of the items to make the kiln just need the brick so should be able to get this done in a weekend. Good luck with the car and the race.

The guy just replied that he wanted to sell all 2000 bricks together and didn't want to split them up. Will Harbison ship the bricks? Surely with gas price it would be cheaper to have them shipped.

I'm sure they will ship them. My wife and I are headed to Chicago for the weekend so figured since i'm going right by there i would just stop and pick them up.

sure, if you want you can call them and order and pay for yours if they can do that? If they can't take payment over phone i can pick them up for you and just pay me when we get back into town? Either way is fine just let me know. Heres the number for Harbison-Walker 563-445-1244 i talked to Sheri
