etching the liner wont effect lockup. The lockup position would only be effected if the actual standoffs, blade thickness or the face of the lock or blade tang was changed. You could put any thickness or reduced thickness scale on the knife and the factors effecting the lockup will remain constant.
This assumes that the standoffs all reseat properly and are etched at equal depths. I don't think the ZTs are made to such tight tolerances or that you'd etch deep enough for it to make a difference but you could. You'd likely not notice it though and the tiny change could be adjusted by slight adjustments to screw tension. When reassembling Blurs you sometimes have to press one side toward the blade as you tighten frame screws or else lockup is off slightly. The knife I've had the most trouble with is the SG2 JYD as the frame is so narrow that tightening the screws without doing a little at a time, like lugnuts on a tire, could cause blade rub.

I guess what I am saying is, problem or not, why risk it if you won't see that area anyway?

I guess the only real answer to that is some people feel the smallest details can make big differences. And I was simply sharing my thoughts on the subject having pimped many many knives over the years and working heavily with Acid etching, heat coloration and anodizing without any issues. You stated there could be a problem, and having done this very modification myself many times (im detail oriented) without issues I'm simply stating that I dont feel there is much risk associated with etching or heat coloring of the liner.
