Typhoon has gone

Just a tiny tropical storm compared to Caribian hurricanes.
No serious problem around my home, just a shower.
This is the first typhoon since I've got this watch.

Looks like a serious drop in pressure. I have a Suunto Observer and I find the barometer function very helpful.

Fujita Yuji,

Tell us a little about typhoons. Right now, you're our resident expert in them!

Hi, Talfuchre. That's terrible.
Too bad you lost the roof even if you could see that
the storm has gone without this kind of gadget.

Yes Watchful, fortunately this typhoon was relatively small one.
Sometimes they bring disaster but basically they are so important
to our country as a source of water.

Sometimes tropical birds are blown to Japan by these storms.

I would think that Kyoto receives a lot of rain and wind for days on end. I believe typhoons produce warm rain?

When Hurricane Ike hit Galveston, we received warm rain for two days straight up here in Chicago--which is about 2,000 km North. That's a big-sized storm. And by the time Ike hit Chicago, it probably lost about 95% of its energy!

Some of the photographs here are quite dramatic.

But in Kyoto, there isn't much you can do to evacuate, is there? Where can you go that you wouldn't just be hit there, as well? If Kyoto is hit by a typhoon, so is Osaka... or Kobe... or Nagoya... even Tokyo would be hit as well...?

Heard about Ike, that looks totally different kind of phenomenon to our typhoon.
A storm ranges 2000km! that cannot be. Whole Japan should be covered.

Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe are behind mountains looked from ocean, which greatly reduce
the energy of typhoon. So these cities are relatively safe as far as tropical storms are
concerned so far. Well, I'm not sure about future as these storms are getting stronger
according to the rising temperature.

Maybe the most serious risk of this kind of weather in Japan is landslide
as most of our country is mountain.

I forgot that the mountains will help deflect the storm!

How else do typhoons differ from hurricanes?
