typical carry

On what you expect to be a 6 hour hike? There is a saying something like if you bring bivy gear, you'll be sure to need to.

It is hard to enjoy a short hike with all that "just in case" weight. If you spend a night out by accident, and are comfortable, you know you brought too much gear in the first place.

If you do not count the clothes I wear, the lunch I expect to eat, and the 1 Qt. of water, the "weight" for the items I listed comes to under five pounds. It occupies less than half of a smallish day pack. That seems little enough to deal with the vagaries. This Spring, we had 80 degree weather one day and 18" of snow starting less than 36 hours later.

Last week I did a two night/three day trip to a mountain near here. I carried

I set things up so that I always have the BK-7 kit and my canteen on my belt and the NRGS around my neck. The becker kit has a space blanket, duct tape, 3 meters paracord, 5 liter water bag, Sparklite & tinder, salt, treated cotton, 3 birthday candles, starflash mirror, ACR whistle, Ibuprophen, compass, Inova LED light, moleskin, KMnO4, needle and #4 waxed line, copper wire, sharpening stone.

If I'm just doing a 6 hour hike I take the cell phone, Becker kit, canteen w/ potable aqua cup and stove sleeve, bic, candle stub, 60 ml syringe and tube, Recta DP-2, some food, poncho, paracord, poncho liner, sawyer extractor, and the NRGS. Mac

For moderate temperatures in the Yukon (near or above freezing), daypack, foam pad for sitting (butt saver), rip-free nylon tarp for emergency shelter, aluminum survival suit, matches, Zippo (freshly filled) compass, whistle, Bark River Woodland or Marble's Fieldcraft, Nalgene water bottle, small flashlight, fire starter, anorak, toque, wool and leather gloves, bandana, hi-visibility orange vest (especially in hunting season), binoculars, high energy snacks (my wife's brownies, usually), lunch, small first aid kit, 30 or 40 feet of 200-lb. nylon cord and a caribineer (a real one, not one of those toys -- you just never know...) I might add a small cook kit and MSR Whisperlite stove (new toy) if we're planning on hot soup with our sandwiches.

For hiking in moderate temps in the maritimes ,I try to go light. For clothing I wear synthetic top and convertible pants. Softshell jacket serves as insulating layer. Hardshell jacket(Arctery'x) and space blanket serve as shelter. Hat and liner gloves. Sunglasses with removeable extra set of clear lenses. These are important in the bush, especially at night.Petzl headlamp.Whistle and compass.Lighter and water tablets.Duct tape for repairs and blisters(moleskin is for little babies:D ). Small first aid kit with pain killers ,bandages, lip balm, tweezers blister lube.Hydration pack and a couple of energy bars.EDC and Leatherman Squirt.I think that's about it.
