U.S. Soldiers in Iraq: Do They Need Fixed Blades?

Stilleto and Rock 6,

Are you both up here in MND-N? I am an "old" retired Special Operations guy running a program for the Army up here. We may be "haunting" some of the same locations. And you guys...ALL of you...are doing a tremendous job here. I know, because I've spent 19 of the last 28 months here working in direct combat support of you all, watching what you do on a daily basis.

Good to here Ron. I was a SIGO for 2/7 SFG about 10 years ago...great bunch of guys and still keep in touch with a few. Shoot me an IM...I'm FOBiting on Speicher.

ROCK6

ROCK6, I have a detachment there, and I travel down there from my "digs" here at Kirkuk quite often. Maybe we'll cross paths sometime. I used to work closely with your former unit back in the "old days." I'lll send you an IM.

I've understood that soldiers very much need and want folding and locking knives, but do they need fixed blades at all? Are they even allowed to carry them? I've heard that military commanders don't want them carrying Ka-Bars and other fixed blades because they might intimidate the Iraqi civilians. What's going on?

Back to the original post...

Do Soldiers NEED a fixed blade?

No, not really.
Any Soldier, remf or not, will get by just fine with only a folder.
But some Soldiers feel more confident and better prepared with a fixed-blade, so why not give them one...it couldn't hurt.

Are they allowed to carry them?

Well, it's been awhile since I was a Soldier (1986-1992), but in the Gulf War we were allowed to carry them.
This is the one my 1st Sgt gave me the day we deployed:
