U.S. to ban flame sources aboard airliners

That means no lighters or matches in carry-on bags, or even in checked luggage. Retail shops along concourses inside secure areas would be banned from selling them, and airport employees couldn't carry them either.

that is the biggest crock of BS. this needs no comment.

The proposed ban is partly based on the fears of another Richard Reid, who tried to light explosives in his shoes aboard a flight to the United States three years ago.

uhh... maybe he should have never had explosives in the first place!!! wow if a guy looking like that maniac can get on a plane with explosives in his shoe then we have some serious problems and they aren't matches or lighters. this is just going to be a huge pain in the ass for everybody and it still wont be a detterrent because if they want/need the lighters and matches then they'll surely get them there. i mean like i said above if that crazy mofo got on there...

oh well. on the plus side, i'll be keeping an eye out for 25 pound lots of confiscated lighters on ebay :) these already exist for scissors, knives, etc.

The airport security people are missing a few obvious things to ban. If they would go further, to ban passengers from wearing clothing and bringing luggage, then, apparently, the airports would be perfectly safe. After all, if someone can be expected to purchase a lighter or matches at their destination, then why can't the flying public also buy a whole new wardrobe when they reach their destinations? :) Just mail it all home before the return flight.

I know that I'm being ridiculous, but do the airport security folks have a point where they see themselves as being ridiculous? They can already search anyone boarding the plane without any Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and seizures....

Wouldn't it just be easier to ban airliners?
That would seem to be the next/last (il)logical step. Then again, why not have an airline only for terrorists? No pilots, no stewardesses, just a plane that explodes as soon as the engine is remotely started. ;)

How about banning passengers?

To make up for the subsequent lack of income, yet another payroll tax could be added to our paychecks to subsidize the ailing airline industry.

I assume that means B.F. members can not browse W&C on their wireless laptops while boarded.:D

I doubt passengers are -- or will be -- allowed to do much more than pay exorbitant prices to be treated poorly.

Merely browsing W&C is a flame source? I thought that it was replying.... ;)

neither does C4 and most explosives or ceramic knives but it doesnt stop them from banning them.

Exorbitant prices? Low prices are ONE reason the airline industry is in as bad shape as it is today - ORD to LAX $158 round trip, ORD to LHR $286 round trip. Regards.

Dumb! What about friction or impact? For that matter, when I was a kid, I made fireworks that you'd light with water!

I agree, prices are low- because they need people to fly. So, they make it as uncomfortable as possible to fly, so fewer people fly. More airlines lay off more people and file for Chapter 11- again, because they need more people to fly. The government swoops in to prop up the failing businesses, which are failing because nobody wants to fly due to fear/inconvenience caused because the government is giving out a neverending list of what more a terrorist can do to bring down a plane and constantly banning things in order to make people feel safer about flying- but in the end only making flying more uncomfortable. Put that together with the corrupt TSA agents who steal from passengers, then blame the airlines- who in turn blame the TSA, and you just have a WONDERFUL experience. I used to LOVE flying. It was fun. Now, who gives a rat's @ss if its cheap? Not when I might as well be stripsearched before every flight. I'd like to wear a biker-style wallet when I fly so I don't have to worry about my wallet going somewhere when I'm distracted by looking after my daughter. Is this going to be possible? What if I get to the airport and some @sshole TSA agent decides he doesn't like the chain? Am I supposed to step to the nearest Kiosk and just dump my wallet contents into a bag and send my wallet home?

I keep hearing that the airline industry is necessary for our economy, and yet all the government does is make it that much harder for people to travel by banning more items. That idiot Senator from North Dakota should be tragged naked in the street and tarred and feathered. So what if you can't smoke on a plane? Does that mean all people carrying a lighter are smokers or planning on executing a "shoe-bomb" attack? I find that reasoning faulty. Of course he ALSO seems to miss the fact that a lot of things can be placed on a plane in advance by ground crews. There's always a way to bring down a plane. Will we live in fear until we choke our economy dry? How sad that a once dear pleasure was turned into crap.

Sincerely,
Anthony

Illiya, you are perfectly free to voluntarily pay higher prices for airline tickets. My suggestion is that YOUR new fare be $2500 for the tickets listed above, that seems fair. The simple fact-of-the-matter is that consumers are unwilling to pay higher prices for increasingly lousy service. Passengers are not treated as valuable customers, but as "hassles" that must be endured by surly airline personnel.

That aside, this ruling about lighters is absurd. How can you stop people from bringing a pack of paper matches or a couple of strike-anywhere wooden matches in their luggage without draconian efforts? If measures are taken (such as strip searches), the industry will lose more and more vacation travelers as only businesspeople traveling to clients will be compelled to endure such treatment.

pressurized lighters are usually what they ban, simply to avoid them blowing in a pocket... zippo were clear. of course that was just what DND had decided.

They can ban anything they want to, including alligator shoes, for instance.

They ask you to empty your pockets. They pat you down. If they find matches, they take them away from you. And if they feel like it, they'll arrest you, handcuff you, and haul you away.

Well if you saw Chronicles of Riddick, he could kill with a coffee mug, or any innocuous item. I guess they will be banning that soon....LOL.

Here's a suggestion:
two queues at airports, one for regular folks and one for terrorists. The terrorists have to go naked and restrained ala Hannibal Lector....waaaaaaaaaa :D

Just kidding folks :D
