Here's a 10/10 Malla, 18.5 inches, 22 ounces. The only thing wrong with this entire rig is a tiny crack (superglue fix) in the beautifully grained saatisal handle -- about 1.5 inches from bolster down right side. Karda and Chakma fine. Scabbard tooled and old style leather and very well done. 100 year HI superfrog.

We are taking fifty bucks off regular for that three minute superglue fix crack in the handle and will deliver this rig to your door for $125.

Call or email if interested.

Tilt: Pala just told me to apply the 20% off to this blem and send it for an even $100.

Sounds more like an UBGA to me.:) Nice knife.:) Hope it goes fast.

Somebody's getting a very nice little knife out of this.
I love my Malla, that's the only reason I haven't put it up for sale to buy a GS. :D

Any chance you could post a closeup pic of that handle Uncle? I've never seen saatisal before. I do seem to remember reading something about it in the archives as being used as an incense? Also that it is somewhat hard to come by.

Congrats Roger, great buy! :)

Most of the handles are saatisal -- tough and looks good. Beo, will know where there are dozens of pix of saatisal handles. Incense is made of "chandan", sandalwood. It looks good, smells good and loves to crack.

CoalBlack - here are a couple of pix which should show off the saatisal handle on my Sher/Kesar 20in AK:

I don't think a sandalwood-handled khuk would be very good, at least not for SAS-style operations--your enemy would smell you coming at 30 paces! ;)

Malas (lit. 'garlands'), which are Hindu/Buddist rosaries, usually with 108 beads on them, are often made from sandalwood. Wonderful odour! Once you've smelled sandalwood, you won't confuse it with anything else--expensive stuff though, US$400+/lb. I believe. Here's a Tibetan/Nepali sandalwood Mala:

(this is from the Silk Roads site (http://www.silkroads.com)--a very nice shop carrying Nepali/Tibetan items. The business is sort of a mirror image of HI - the one owner is an American who married a Nepalese woman; but he lives in Kathmandu and his father (rather than father-in-law), who remains in the USA, is his partner in the business)

cheers, B.

if you feel like wading through a long thread on satisaal, here it is - mainly Walosi and Berkley trying to pin down exactly what satisaal is, with a few amatuerish attempts by myself to help.

:o Oops my mistake! Thanks for the correction!. With that being the case, that might be what's on my WWII I just got. It looks like rosewood and smells like rosewood and I think that's what it is. Is saatisal their term for rosewood then? Or have I made another mistake?

By the by Uncle, I finally got the Chiruwa AK today! It arrived last week but I work 12 hour shifts on the weekends and couldn't get to it till today. Wow! what a monster! Fantastic fit and finish! Interesting contrast between it and the WWII. Each blade definately has it's own unique personality. The WWII is a more lively and quick blade in the hand. It feels eager to go to work. The AK on the other hand is a no nonsense juggernaut. It seems to say "I WILL go through anything in my way!". Something grimm about it too. Thanks for the great deal on it!

Thanks Beoram:) !!

You got all that in there before I finished my previous post! All right, so I was busy fondling my new AK while I was typing and took longer with it than I should have. Thanks again!

I've done the same thing! ;)

On the 'what is satisaal' question - see the thread I mention above.

Thanks again for great help, Beo. We need an appropriate title for you. Anybody got ideas? The first one to pop into my head was "HI Tech Consultant" but I know somebody has a better one than this.

CoalBlack, that UBDOTD almost brought a tear to my eye. The prettiest piece of Saatisal I've seen to date came on a "cracked handle Malla". Whatever the botanists call the tree, and whether it is a "hill oak" or some variety of rosewood, it responds better to a hand-rubbed oil finish than any other wood I've worked. I'm trying to learn enough lighting and close-up photography to show some of the woods on my handles, with about the same luck as I've had on the lottery, so far. There is one grain stripe on the handle of my GS that might take - 1/4" wide stripe of dark brown on the light brown background that shows very plainly when the handle is held in one position, and disappears completely when the handle is turned about 15°. Lots and lots of good stuff goes with these Khuks :D

Okay, I've read the thread.

I have now learned stuff about;

-linguistic etymology
-British motorcycles and cars and their inability to keep oil in the crankcase (quality of British engineering in general)
-West Texas cheerleaders (and how many of 'em you could get into an MG)
-whistle pigs
-celtic swords
-the impending doom of the Brazilian Rosewood
-native american mysticism
-injustices committed against indiginous people all over the world
-how many people could fit in a Model A
-Huey, Dewey and Louie (who were indeed Jr. Woodchucks as I recall)
- The Social Ramifications of Woodchucks Cucking Wood

AND

And that saatisal might be a rosewood or a specie of oak and might also go by the name of "Bastard Teak".

As for Beoram, I say dub him the HI Loremaster.

I'm going to go lie down now and mentally digest what I have read.
