UBDOTD -- KNN Malla with tiny crack in handle. Pix & Deal

You have noticed, then, that our threads can be categorized as "malleable topic" discussions

That's a good way to put it:)

But it makes for enjoyable reading! Not to mention that it provides useful information as well. If I had known about cheerleaders and MGs when I was in high school maybe my social life would have been different;)

....if you would :) When the Malla arrives, hold it a moment before you unsheath it (not easy, I know). When you have the bare blade in hand, post a one-word, first impression of the knife. Just curiosity...I'd like to see how it compares with mine. I still remember it vividly.

you know I just have to say that the Malla is one of the best looking khukuris that there is IMHO. I absolutely must get one of these down the road. As soon as my business starts to make instead of just spend money;)

I have now learned stuff about;

-linguistic etymology
-British motorcycles and cars and their inability to keep oil in the crankcase (quality of British engineering in general)
-West Texas cheerleaders (and how many of 'em you could get into an MG)
-whistle pigs
-celtic swords
-the impending doom of the Brazilian Rosewood
-native american mysticism
-injustices committed against indiginous people all over the world
-how many people could fit in a Model A
-Huey, Dewey and Louie (who were indeed Jr. Woodchucks as I recall)
- The Social Ramifications of Woodchucks Cucking Wood

AND

And that saatisal might be a rosewood or a specie of oak and might also go by the name of "Bastard Teak".

As for Beoram, I say dub him the HI Loremaster.

I'm going to go lie down now and mentally digest what I have read.

I like Loremaster ;) - don't know if I really qualify though.

I forgot how much that thread wandered... ;)

At least outhouses didn't find their way into it, as they seem to be in an increasing no. of threads

Just a typical day at the Cantina.

If it's Loremaster you want it's HI Resident Loremaster you'll get unless somebody is dead set against it for good reason. Speak now or forever hold your khukuri.

Beoram AKA HI Resident Loremaster. Sounds good to me!:)

sounds like a character from the Lord of the Rings, but if Ben is comfortable with it, I think it fits:)

Uh, was there something else in high school that I missed?;)

Berk - if you combine Uncle Bill's & CoalBlack's suggestions, I could be HI Resident Magician and Loremaster! :D Now that really sounds like something from Lord of the Rings! ;)

Too much Beowulf for me recently, probably why 'Loremaster' appealled (if the Normans hadn't invaded, schools would be 'lore-houses' ;) it's true!). In any case, I fear 'Loremaster' would need to be qualified by 'miscelleanous' or something--as I know a little bit about a few things, and not a lot about much (other than linguistics...hopefully!), e.g. I'm not like JP in having 'expert-level' knowledge in anything (again, other than ling. hopefuly).

I'm perfectly happy with whatever....sharing HI Resident Linguist with ruel suits me too.

cheers, B.

Wal,
I'd love to. I look forward to it with much anticipation. The Bura and Sher AKs are tough and unfortunately got the brunt of my learning about horn and sharpening. The Kesar and Durba won't be touched until I get it right. My series of BAS seem to be more versatile - the lightness and size are a good combination. My WWIIs are lovely and give me a chance to reflect on the changes not only on the blades themselves but the men who bore them. One feels the ferocity of these warriors and the determination to protect one's country and comrades during that time as you hold them. I would never want to face a soldier charging at me with one of them, much less a regiment.

I could go on ad nauseum, with my other khuks and my admiration of them as I have fallen in love with these works of art.
I never imagined that my fondness for firearms would be eclipsed in many ways by these beauties. Different but still powerful.

The Malla has been on the list for a while. Wood has taken my spirit I think. Sanding, oiling and admiring are a part of my evening ritual now. To receive a khuk with the history of the Malla; holding it in my hand and giving my impression would truly be my pleasure.

are evident in your last post, Rog, so let me amend my request from "One Word" to "First Word" :D

Hi Resident Magician and Loremaster it is. Put this in your sig, Beo, and it's official.

Stay tuned. Pala has another Malla giveaway for today. And a BAS with some rust. I have to shut down and restart to get the pix and I'll do that within an hour.

Wal,
Got the Malla in my hand last night at 3am when I got home from work. Only had a short while to look at it.

First word that hit me when I thought about it was not really a word but a feeling. It was a bit unsettling as I held it. Light, fast and controlled. The feeling was simply that: controlled. Controlled power, controlled purpose and controlled focus. This khuk was meant for something different than any I've held before. Holding it I knew I could make it go when and where I wanted it to. I felt the blade snap back and forth in my hand as I moved it. Quite different from any AK I have held. This could chop, I have no doubt, but it is not suited.
You wrote of its purpose as a fighter and I agree but I'm not sure my initial feeling was the same as yours. My expreience is not as deep or broad, but this Malla does speak to me.
We have written in this forum lately as to anthropormorphizing our favored tools. If I was to name a khuk, it would be this one.

I picked up the Malla today Wal. Hmmmm....

Maybe I've been spoiled by the two khuks that I already have. The kami who made this khuk doesn't seem to really have made his best effort. The handle is cracked in two places and the wood appears to have been scorched in one spot behind the bolster. The bolster itself has wide gaps between it and the blade.
The blade has more of a satin finish than the high polish that my WWII and AK have, the edge is dull as a rock. I hope that I am wrong but there appears to be a crack in the steel, just forward of the bolster. The feel of the blade in my hand is kind of clunky. My Chiruwa Ak, the "Implacable" one:) , feels more nimble in my hand despite it's massiveness and there is absolutely no comparison with the wonderful alivness of my WWII. Nope, this one didn't do it for me at all I'm afraid. Not that I am faulting the blade design but just this particular blade. Sorry Wal.

I'm sorry if my comments offend anyone here. I know how much we all want to support the fine people at Birghorka. I also know that this blade would be considerd a pretty decent piece of work compared to your average village khuk. However I feel obligated to make these observations because I know from being a skilled workman in my own trade, that it is absolutely essential for any man who is proud of his craft to hear the criticisms as well as the praise. With no critique of the work being made there can be no improvement. It is in that spirit that I offer my comments. My appreciation for khukuris has not been dimmed one bit and Uncle Bill you can be assured that I will be continuing to add to my collection.

Should I put on my fire retardent, nomex coverall now?

CoalBlack, rest easy freind. One of the unusual (and pleasant) characteristics of the HI forum is the absence of flaming. A reasonable and supported opinion is always welcome. Just be honest and say your piece. I, for example, have been an insufferable pest (scarcely more than a troll :D ) to this forum since day one ...and no has given me the time and consideration of a good flaming yet:(

Even Bura and Sanu will have bad days. It's just part of the deal with handmade stuff and maybe why Pala gave it away.

I got a knife once that was close to a disaster -- a BAS as I recall. I can't remember who made it but it should never have left BirGorkha. I had a customer at that time 2 or 3 years ago who was in school and broke. I told him I'd send the knife free if he wanted to play with it and try to save it. He said fine. When he got it he wrote a review telling us what a bad knife it was and posted it on the forum.

Reviews are no good unless they are honest and many thanks for telling it as you did.
