Ubiquitous knife to pick up after plane flight...

Has anybody tried the Superknife idea? I wonder if they'd take it away even without the blades as it looks kind of like a box cutter, which is not allowed.

How about you buy a good knife everywhere you go and mail it to your self when you leave. You could have one hell of a collection when your done.

there is no way I'm carrying any knife IWB in a cardboard sheath:eek:

Cardboard actually works pretty well as a temporary scabbard material. Lots of knives are carried in leather sheaths, after all. I carried farm knives in my back pocket in a cardboard scabbard for years. After I made my big Bowie knife, I wanted to carry it around before making the scabbard, so I'd know what kind of features I'd actually need and use before investing the work in a permanent one. I carried that knife almost daily for the better part of 3 or 4 months in a rolled up piece of cardboard before I got around to making one from wood.

Good luck on the Superknife idea. Seems like a sure way to get a personal invititation to a strip search and a pre-flight hassle. (and even after the hassle I would be surprised if they let you on with it) If I was that concerned about having a knife I would either check one or buy a little Buck Solo ($9.95) or SAK at Wally World and give it away or drop it in the mail.

I travel quite a lot during the year, and find it is quicker to wait for my bags (<15 minutes) than to drive all over a town looking for a Wal-Mart to buy a knife (> 1 hour).

Just check a SAK in your bag and be done with it.

i really dont think you can have your cake and eat it too.

the only quick and hassle free suggestion i second, was the el cheapo $3 gas station things.

even easier than trying to locate a walmart or target, and cheaper.

Wenger makes a version of the Esquire that has a precision screwdriver instead of a knife blade, that is TSA approved.

I just came across that myself in a paper catalog yesterday. They have a Clipper with a pen blade and a Clipper with the screwdriver for flight.

I'd hate to have some TSA approved misunderstanding over it.

On the other hand, I am seriously thinking of picking one up anyway for my gear bag. It looks like a handy item. :)

I never fly anywhere but if I did ... You can get a paring knife anywhere -- grocery stores, hardware stores, dollar stores -- you wouldn't have to look far to find a paring knife for sale. You could bring an empty pocket sheath with you, or stick it in your wallet.

I would not be able to stand walking around with any knife that has the factory edge on it, though. I would have to bring a GI keyring hone with a tripoli-charged strop glued to one side.

Well, I have two answers to my own question from Wally World. The first is a Superknife variation, the Gerber EAB razor knife. Its only $10, so if taken it wouldn't be a big deal, takes standard $1 contractor razors. The second is a 5.5 inch made in China fixed blade in the dining utensils section for 94 cents. That would work well for the idea of finding a usable sheath for carry if desired, depending on the local legalities. I haven't been in an airport lately to poke around (thank God!). Thanks for all the input, and somebody post to let us know what happens if they try taking a Superknife without a blade through in carry on.

If you hate the idea of being unarmed just buy a newspaper roll it up lengthwise
and fold it in half. The bulb of the folded part is as hard as oak and you can take it right on the plane. 2 newspaper batons and some filipino stick fighting practice and you are in a position to prevent a hijacking if the worst happens. And if it is nothing more than a boring flight you have some reading material.
I would buy a Buck 110 and mail it home or give to business contacts on my trip.
