Ugh.. Bear vs father-in-law's cats.

b2d,
:) I worked for a man that had a Persian that went wild on him. Always been a housecat and never friendly but it turned downright MEAN on him and his wife. Several attacks and started living in the garage. He and she were both nervous to go in the garage out of fear of being attacked. I offered to visit one day while they were out of the house and alleviate him of the problem- see neither of them could do it out of sentimentality for the good years. He just left the garage door open and the cat found the road.
I just do not understand keeping an animal that gets mean and aggressive to its owners. Farm life teaches one that death is a part of life ;)

Get rid of the cats, permanently. Don't mess around with them, just kill them. I'd be more worried about the bear than the cats at this point. Feral cats are nasty, disease carrying vermin they are thought to kill multiple billions of small animals in the US every year. They carry all kinds of nasty stuff like taxoplasmosis, ringworm, roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, fleas, ticks, FIV,etc. They can spread diseases to wildlife. If they're on a fairly large property in the woods my solution would be to just kill them. They make neck traps, like mouse traps for cats. Or if they feel like spending a bunch of money you can have a vet euthanize them. They also make this thing called a .22 that works great on their heads if the property's big enough to fire it safely. If it's a smaller neighborhood, animal control will take them away and they usually euthanize them, it may cost a bit of money depending on the location though. And for the love of god, don't feed them, aside from carrying diseases, the food is attracting other wildlife, which at the very least will cause wildlife to suffer and at most will get someone mauled by bear.

WTF that cat would have been fed to the bears a long time ago :P

Yeah, he actually did disappear after awhile. I've no idea whatever went with that little stinker, I'm guessing he became excessively gassy one day and just rocketed away! ;-) That was one stinky lil' pooper of a cat!

Sentimentality is one thing, but being scratched and bitten is another. :-) I don't blame you, it's aggression shouldn't have been tolerated, as it'd be all to easy to lose an eye to the cat's claws. :-)

If it were up to me, I'd dispatch them quickly and painlessly. My father-in-law's wife loves those cats and he won't take em' out, or let me do it either (I would if they would allow it, to prevent the spread of those ferals and feline diseases.) A bear got into the garbage on their back porch not long ago, and there has been one down the hill from them digging around. I've already told him, "Your blueberries will disappear! I wouldn't advise planting a crop with the bears around, they'd likely eat the sprouts!" It's also attracted raccoons, coyotes, and a feral dog I believe. I can remember as a boy, my father helped me to raise hens, and a couple ferals got into the coop. My dad took care of em'.

I have been pulling turn of the century coins out of a farmers field. He lives alone, has about two dozen cats and is pretty eccentric. I walked by this tumble down and got a nose full. First thing I see is a mangled cat in the grass, then skunks inside. I counted nine with one that walked about twenty five yards before going to skunk Valhalla. I guess that the farmer was choked about his fur babies getting mauled and eaten. So he poisoned the lot of them

Had lunch with my father-in-law, and finally he decides to put the kittens up for adoption. His wife is going to have the female cat fixed. I guess that solves the problem in some way..I think.
