  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Ugh - fero and PJCB failure tonight

My push button starter on my gas BBQ on my deck wouldn't ignite the gas one day a year or so back. No worry - Firesteel! Oops - wouldn't throw a spark far enough. Plan B - those goopy dryer lint balls in film cannisters to keep the petroleum based goop from evaporating. Lit it with the firesteel on the grill. Flamed - then black smoke - small black plastic wad on grill - and I forgot to open the gas! The dryer lint was mostly synthetics - hard to get off the grill, too.

I went inside and stripped a bunch of Q-tips - dipped in nose-clearing menthol goop. It ignited - but the gas bottle proved to be empty. I fried the burgers inside - gave the BBQ to my b-i-l - seven+ years and the second bottle of gas was empty - I didn't use it much. I need to buy some matches.

Stainz

Nope - I didn't fluff them at all. They weren't even cotton balls - they were the flat cotton discs that come in a sleeve.

All we have are those condensed cotton discs in our house and I steel them from my wife as well. I rip a small hole in the middle of them and put my firesteel and striker such that they are sandwiching the pad but touching each other through the hole in the pad. One strike is usually sufficient to get the pad fired up. I do this with dry (not petroleum jelly laden) cotton pads.

So I went out back to get the fire going in the backyard to enjoy some beer and sit around the fire.

I got some cotton in PJ and tried to light it with some sparks. I couldn't get it going.... the wind was killing me and I didn't have a good way to sheild the wind. I switched to a match and it went up in no time. I put some fatwood on top of it and that's all she wrote :)

I'm sure I could have made it work eventually but I got a bit discourage and was anxious to enjoy the flames and beer

I've always had good luck with sparks and PJCB... not tonight.

Dont live in OK do you? I fought this Friday night as well doing the same thing as you :)
