Hey guys, haven't been around for a bit, but I need your help. Im stuck on getting the SFA or the hunters axe, by price the SFA is what I want, though in looks the hunter axe gets it, any have both and compare them?

So what do you think guys, SFA or hunters axe.

The Small Forest Axe and the Hunters Axe are very similar. The main difference is in the rounded poll on the Hunter's Axe. If you are looking for an axe that is even more versatile, go with the Scandinavian Forest Axe. It is slightly longer and if you don't mind the length, it will pay off with less fatigue in the long run.

In the axe tomahawk forum from someone with both that they prefer the curved handle of the sfa over the straight hunters axe handle.
I have the sfa and it's great.

Yeah tat handle of the SFA is more sooting to me, and the extra length is what Im trying to get away of. Thanks so far guys, and for 95 I can get the SFA so its looking good for me.

SFA/Hunter's Axe (estela nailed the comparison): Don't expect it to be as good splitting wood as it is cutting wood.

I handled both & preferred the SFA over the Hunter's Axe. The SFA just felt better in my hand.

ahh, good stuff guys thanks. the SFA seems to be the choice for me. Packable, but still able to handle larger tasks. Plus in my area (Nova Scotia) the shape of the head should prove usful we have alot of spruce, pine soft woods. there are hard woods, but birch, maple and some ash is about all your going to find.

I have the hunters axe becasue I got it in trade. It's an excellent axe, but I'd rather have a flat poll on the back for some light hammering. I'd get the SFA.

Fonly unless you plan on using the flayed poll of the Hunters axe for hides, and skinning/butchering large game, go with the SFA.

Have used/owned:
Wetterlings medium hunter
GB Hunters axe (sold it pretty quick)
GB SFA
GB Scandi forest axe (by far my favorite for up here)

Since I have a good hatchet, I kept the Scandi Forest axe. If I had to go with one for backpacking I would use the Small forest axe.

Lends itself to more general outdoor uses, and is the perfect "compromise" between hatchet and limbing axe.

Thats the way I see it. My CS Trailhawk is too small and fiskars is too large. I need something in between. Plus GB is a great name, the busse of axe's as I see it.:D:thumbup:

I have a Hunters. It's a nice well made axe but to me it is too small to really swing with both hands (although you can) and too big to really aim like a hatchet (although you can with practice)

I have never owned any LARGER but if I had to do it again rather than the Hunters I'd get the next size up (Scandanavian FA?) and if I was going smaller I'd get the Wildlife, unless I was backpacking and then I'd get the mini.
