ugh...so many knives to choose from...

At first, I was going to pick a CRKT M16, but apparently they are not that great. After a while of searching for other knives which I like, I ended up with a huge list (about 10 knives) to choose from.
I currently own an SAK trekker (One handed) and a CQC-7 for EDC purposes. However, the Trekker is not super sturdy and the CQC-7 would break my heart (and my wallet's heart) if I lost it.

So my question to you is: which one of these knives should I get as an EDC? I won't be doing anything unreasonable with it, but it should be able to serve as a self defence tool if needed.
  • Kershaw Black Vapor II ($32)
  • Kershaw Groove ($56)
  • Kerhsaw Shallot ($60)
  • Kershaw Leek ($50)
  • SOG Aegis ($68)
  • SOG Flash II ($59)
  • SOG Trident ($65)
  • Buck Stealth Pilot 440C ($30)
  • Emerson Reliant ($47)
The prices listed are USD and are from Newgraham since I will getting the knife from them.

Thanks in advance.

the shallot and flash 2 are my favorite out of the ones you listed. i have both the frn and aluminum versions of the flash 2.

Of the Kershaw models on your list I prefer ( in this order )...
Kerhsaw Shallot ($60)
Kershaw Leek ($50)
Kershaw Groove ($56)
I excluded the Vapor II because I have one and I'm not impressed at all.

For SOG
SOG Flash II ($59) ( aluminum only)
SOG Trident ($65 )

I don't have experience with the rest

in fact, sog flash 2 is one of my all time favorites.

You can't go wrong with a shallot, if you can, spend the extra pennies for a ZPD189 composite blade or a S110V model, they are only an extra $10 or $20 but the difference is worth much more than that.

I haveowned all the Keshaws on your list:

Kershaw Black Vapor II ($32) - Sucks. There are much better knives for the money.

Kershaw Groove ($56) - Good quality, sturdy knife and the flipper is cool. The grooves get old after a while.

Kershaw Leek ($50) - I have three. Highly recommended. It is a better built Vapor with AO.

I would get a flash I.

Id go for the frn one with plain edge. I like my edc knives tiny and my toys huge.

I think I have narrowed the list down to four knives:
- SOG Aegis
- SOG Flash II
- Kershaw Shallot
- Kershaw Groove

I didn't put the leek in since it seems a bit too similar to the shallot.

Why is spyderco not on your list? Just wondering.. i'm not trying to be a jerk. They are worth looking into.

Out of the 4 you listed I would go with the Shallot. I have 2 and they see most of the pocket time.

Plus there penetration is excellent. I have a scar on my left index finger to prove it.:D

so the general consensus is that the shallot is the best. Could someone explain why? Not trying to sound like a jerk or anything, but no one (with the exception of flashpoint) has really explained why it's the best. Also, all of the Kershaws listed will have a Sandvik 13C26 blade. My budget is really tight at the moment :(

EDIT: I've been searching for a while about the knives and have rounded the list off to 2 knives
- SOG Aegis
- Kershaw Shallot

It would be nice if someone could give me a side by side comparison listing the pros and cons of each

thanks in advance.

It's going to come down to what you like.

Both knives have pros and cons. But those pros and cons will be based on your personal criteria.

The quality of the blade steel is similar.

The Aegis has the Arc Lock which is similar to Benchmade's Axis Lock. It's a very good lock and the Zytel handle makes it more grippy than the Shallot's thinner all metal frame. Some don't like Zytel and say it gives a knife a cheap feel, but if you are going to use the knife when your hands are wet or oily then Zytel might be better.

The Aegis lock is more complex, as compared to the Shallot's, so there's more parts that can break.

Most SOG knives have a great low-ride pocket clip ( the knife disappears in the pocket). But the Shallot is thinner even though it sits higher in the pocket.

Based on US prices the Shallot should be almost half the cost of the Aegis, if the same is true is Australia, the Shallot might be a better bargain.

Either way no matter which you pick, they're both great knives. I'm a fan of both SOG and Kershaw.
