ugh...so many knives to choose from...

Whoa, SOG makes those in PE too? I really like the design, but until now have only seen them in PS. How is the blade play on that model?

i havent seen the aluminum version in PS either, i went ahead and bought it with the combo edge anyway, its still an excellent knife. mine did have a tiny bit of side to side play, but the pivot screw just needed to be tightened a bit and it got rid of the play.

its on of my top favorite knives.

 that arc lock is nice! I think I have decided to get the aegis. One last question, the aegis with the satin finish is about $10 cheaper than the black coated blade. I know how to take care of knives so rust isn't much of an issue as well. Is it worth paying an extra $10 for the black blade?

if you like black blades. Im happy that satin blades are cheaper, black blades suck imho.

Out of all you had listed, I think you came down to two of the better choices. I tend to shy away form AUS 8 myself because most of my experience with it has been poor heat treating. As long as SOG done a good job with the heat treatment you'll be fine. I like SOG's arch lock better the Benchmades axis lock personally.

As far as why I like the Shallot. It rides real well in the pocket, though I thought it rode too high and had some low ride clips made for it. The contour of the handle makes for a good positive grip despite the scales being a little of the slick side (those slick scales makes it slide in and out of the pocket with ease). The blade profile cuts like a laser and the shape make for easy penetration. Plus the A/O pops the knife open quick and easy.

Honestly though, if it would have been for the exotic steel that was available with the Shallot I probably wouldn't have given them too much thought. Not that the 13C isn't a good steel, but it was the exotic stuff the got my attention.

I'm sure you'll be happy with the SOG, they make good stuff. Maybe when you get the chance you can wright up a review, because I haven't really seen much about the Aegis.

BTW I would stick with the non-coated blade.

Well, I emailed customs and I'm good to go for assited opening knives (after a bit of paper work). However, I was just about to order the aegis tanto but stopped. I just wanted to ask, how solid is the aegis? Does the blade have any play? I know the shallot is rock solid and I think how solid the knife FEELS will make a big difference to what I end up getting. Also, does anyone know how good sogs heat treating is? I've heard good things about 13C26 but not much good about AUS8...

I handled an Aegis recently and the lateral blade play was horrendous. Great size, ergonomics, clip and looks.
Experience with a Trident (same piston lock? ...check their website!) has been dissappointing. My postage (for waranty) to the US is catching up to the purchase price of the knife! Broken spring, thumb stud for disengaging lock broke off, safety lock failed. I don't even edc the knife.
Great customer service and replaced everything...very inconvenient though!
I would go with a Kershaw.

Well that sucks :( I hate having play in my blades. The reason I love my trekker and my cqc is the fact that both knives are 100% rock solid. I think I'm going to go for the shallot (I think I also remember nutnfancy saying the aegis had a fair bit of vertical play). Depending on shipping costs, I may even pay the extra $$$ and get the ZDP-189 version:D

From your list, I only have 2 - the Flash II and Leek. Both are decent but I like the Leek a bit more than the Flash II as an EDC since it is a bit smaller to carry. I got the all black version of the Leek from WalMart and a kydex neck sheath from CountyComm. Nice setup.

Could I interest you in other models like the Kershaw Skyline and OD-1 or the Spyderco Tenacious. All less expensive than your listed knives but very high-value knives. My favorite is the Skyline which gets the most EDC carry for me.

Excelent! I love the look of the skyline (I'm a fan of straight up knives without fancy blade shapes and recurves). Dunno if it's just me, but the skyline sort of reminds me of the Benchmade 710  Should I get the Damascus blade or the satin 13C26 (I think i'll be getting this instead of the shallot...)?

It's also below $50:D

Out of the ones on your list I'd go with the spyderco delica 4 Frn.:D Great knife and it appears to be in your price range!

if you go with Shallot ZPA-189 be advices that it's about 1/3 thinner than the other Shallots. That may or may not make difference. To me it's almost too thin. The 110v would be good direction to go if the other composite blade is too thin.

The Skyline is a nice knife but to me is more of a gents folder. It's very thin and light. I've got the DAM version, but if I was going to use it a lot I would want the 13c.

do you guys know of any other tactical/EDC folders within this price range? I would like the design to be straight up like the skyline and the BM710. At the moment all I'm considering is the shallot (ZDP-189) and the skyline. My main concern is studriness. The knife should be able to withstand a beating and have almost no play. How is the Emerson reliant? I havnt heard anything about it so I'm not sure if it's decent or crap.

Thanks for helping so far and sorry for being a pain.

the skyline is a must have, though i wouldnt consider it a hard use knife. its pretty light, and only has 1 liner.

what about a cold steel ti lite ? the zytel handle ones are like 40 bux, strong, and have a long razor sharp blade.

there is also the cold steel ultimate hunter, has a similar blade shape to the skyline, this is a very strong knife.

I like the Ti lite, but the ultimate hunter is out of my price range. However, I think the Ti lite will be a bit too big to fit in my pocket...

Actually, think the Ti-Lite is pretty cool. Ive rounded off the list to 4 knives and no matter what happens I will not change my mind!
- Cold Steel Ti-Lite
- Buck Bantam BHW*
- Kershaw Skyline
- Emerson Reliant

Note that I may also want to use them as tactical knives.
*The BHW is not a buck USA knife :( does this affect the quality? Perhaps the BLW will be a better choice since its made in the USA.

I agree. The Skyline is a nice simple and clean design. I'd go for the Sandvik 13C26 - it's a good steel.

+1 & What appeals to me about the Skyline is it's light weight and simple clean design which is perfect for EDC but as 3mptin3ss stated, I wouldn't classify it as a hard-use knife.

Kershaw Skyline!  Also have you looked at the Buck Vantage Pro in S30V or the Buck Mayo in 420HC w/ aluminum handles? I believe they are USA made - someone correct me if I am wrong.

Two of my favorite EDC are Kershaw Skyline and CRKT Drifter. Both low priced, compact and cut well. If you lose them easy to replace.

I think I'll just get the ti lite AND the skyline :D
Everyone says get the skyline and the ti lite is just too cool to pass up.
And best of all, only $70.
