I couldn't just call these curly redwood. You can call them what you like. They were cut from a piece of slow growing old growth. Much tighter growth rings, darker coloring and dramatic figure.

Originally I was going to post some of the blocks for sale here.
I am supposed to be getting things ready for the OKCA show that is coming up so I will place these blocks in our webstore just in case anyone who is not going to the show wants to get one or two of them. They should be posted in the webstore Saturday afternoon.

This link will take you to the Stabilized Redwood Section in the webstore. Try not to buy them all so the guys at the show can get some.

Here are a couple photos showing the difference with a sideways vs upright view.

There is a little story behind this wood.
My boss and I went on a hunt to get some redwood in Northern California.
One of the places we stopped. The guy was a redwood wholesaler for the past 25+ years. When telling what I was looking for he kept trying to sell us plain stuff that might be good to make picnic tables or something. My boss asked me if I saw anything I wanted to get. I said nothing that he was trying to sell us, but there was an old gray piece propping the fence gate open.

I asked the guy what he wanted for it. He answered "You don't want that ugly piece. It's just junk." I said "I know, but maybe I could use it to hold open the gate at my house, like you are doing." He shook his head like he thought I was dumb and said "Just take it". My boss said no and handed him some money while I loaded it in the truck. I knew what was inside but the expert just thought I was dumb and obnoxious. I overheard him saying to my boss, "what kind of people you got working for you these days?"

Nice wood!

I'm curious ...exactly where did you get that junk.
I might know the place.lol

Pretty close to you.
But not the burl guy in Fortuna.
It was in Arcata.

I have a knife being made for me by Magnus Axelson.
When it came time to select handle material I knew I wanted to use redwood but I was torn between 3 different pieces. So I sent him a photo for his opinion.
It was the one on the right that caught his eye. That is the one I will be using on my knife.
