Ugly sheath inlay help

Well it seemed like a good idea but it looks kinda childish to me now that its done. This was the first inlay I have tried on a sheath.
What do you think should I try again if so what should I change?
Or should I take out the stiches and give it a non inlay front?

The inlay is bone. This sheath is for my "Them Bones" drop point in canister damascus and bone I posted a while back.

Thanks in advance.

The idea is good, but the bone shape just didn't work. Just my opinion but if you had just put a small oval or circle of bone for the inlay it would have come together. even better would be an oval with some simple scrimshaw.

I dont know Haley that may be like polishing a turd:) That and because I dont scrimshaw it would most likely make it worse if I tried! Thanks for the idea though!

I think your correct Mike. My dad suggested a bone concho. But I was leaning toward a smaller oval and some tooling. If that doesnt work I will drop the idea, at least for now. I would like to work on dressing up my sheaths some but the knife is more important.

A bone concho sounds good. you could stitch it in to give it some support and have a simple braided strap coming out of it.
Scrimshaw is just a scratch with ink in it. That is the simplified explanation of course. Sand smooth, scratch a initial, wipe with ink and polish. If you don't like it sand it smooth again.

I think its just great that you have the gumption to try something like that, have it be a bust (esthetically) and then be willing to share it with us. Kudos to you!

It's a little difficult to see closely, due to the darkness of the photo and limited contrast, but it looks like you did an outstanding job. The concho or shield idea sound good. I personally like the concho one as it came from your Dad, which adds an intangible family collaborative aspect to the project. I'm a sucker for stuff like that.

Again, thanks for sharing. I always told my farm apprentices they would probably learn more about organic and biodynamic farming while they were working at my farm by also paying attention to all the ways NOT to do things!

Really appreciate your sharing your efforts.

I have done it both as an inlay and as a concho, but the inlays were always small and oval like you said.I haven't done one in awhile, but the picture below will give you an idea.I ground a small lip on the piece and cut the opening a little small and inserted while damp.Dave:)
