Well here I am sitting by the gate at the Kansas City airport flying to Salt Lake to do some business. I just went through security and dumped all my stuff in one of those gray bins and sent it through the scanner. I walked forward and waited patiently on the other side watching it come out and reached down to grab all the junk. Sitting in the container was my AG Russell funny folder. It sailed right on through, Whew!!! I guess it looks like a memory stick when it is folded up. I think I just got lucky. Ya know I'm not sure if this goes here but just wanted to let the folks know. If this should go somewhere else go ahead and move it. I just posted here due to the fact there are so many good guys here. I wish I knew a tenth of what some of you fellas do. OK off to the plane with a funny folder in my pocket.

My wife flew from the east coast to Washington State and back again. Little did she know that my son had put her Dozier folding Kabar in her purse a week earlier, so she would always have an EDC. She discovered it during a layover on the way back, called me in a panic and I told her not to touch it and keep her mouth shut.

Not once, but twice it had passed through security. I'm convinced TSA does more to manage the impression of safety than manage safety itself. That Dozier has a big, wide 3" drop-point blade!

Makes you think dont it.
But truth be told it surprises me, since I've seen guys been pulled out, because they had one of them multi tool key things, and just forgot it there.

Anyway, I'm glad you made it trough ok.

Have a safe trip(cant really say 'dont stay without a knife for too long a time' ;) can I?)

Peter

I am so down in the dumps about the whole thing.. OH MY GOSH ----- GITMO????!!?? NO WAY!! I'm going under cover, traveling incognito, 007, and buying one of those Zorro masks so no one will notice me. How Long Do I Have to Stay Undercover??

In the early '90s I walked through the scanner with a 4" Gerber in my jacket pocket. Now, the wire in my chest sets off the alarm. I think they may have tuned the metal detector a bit. ;)

From what I have seen, the TSA screeners in the small airports are more alert then at the big ones. Of course, they don't have much to do most of the time.

I'd agree with that as well. Makes a bit of sense though...in the big city TSA is probably viewed as a few steps above fast food, but in a lot of small towns a TSA can be a pretty good job.

A few years back, I got to my destination and opened my briefcase in the hotel room, only to find:

A 4.5" Cold Steel folder
A MTM Ammo Wallet full of 9mm JHP's
A fully loaded .38 Special speedloader

Apparently all of it sailed through the scanner with no notice at all.

This was at Birmingham International Airport.

My colleague was stopped for a small can of mozzi spray and nail scissors (tiny). They confiscated them and let her join me. Was she angry when she found that I had an SAK, a multitool, a mora,,,,,,,,,,,,, I didn't intend getting them through but my driver had rammed them into my boots and met me at the airport connecting back through to SA.

You just happened to miss that? :)

Airport security measures make me nervous, knowing that I am basically flying with a bunch of unarmed passengers vulnerable to just about any kind of hijacking.

Now with the conversation going in this thread we know security is full of holes and that the system is more vulnerable than ever.

Not a good reason. Moving to the General Knife Discussion Forum.

When I went to the state fair, I went through the metal detector with a BM Grip, Vic Ranger, keys, flashlight, etc, no problem. At a campaign rally, I set it off with nothing metal on me at all

Right, I always bring a SurFire Defender (only got questioned once about it) and my trusty Tuff-Writer tactical / defense pen (nobody's blinked so far) but I feel a little bit like a dog with no teeth when flying.

I have a friend who wraps paracord on a large carabiner to make a poor-man's set of brass knuckles, I thought that was pretty inventive.

Anybody have any inventive solutions for protection while flying?
