Take a look at the Philippine garrote. It is a wooden training sword. You want one that is a meter long. Make sure it is legal in the UK. If not, I would get a baseball bat, preferably aluminum.
I used to walk my dog while carrying a walking stick tht I Carved out of lignum Vitae. It had an oval cross section. I was concerned about dog attacks, and for good reason.
