UKPK: Now I get it!

After scraping up enough dough for a new Spyderco, I struggled with indecision: Mini-Manix or UKPK? Two great knives, two different purposes, same great manufacturer... I pulled the trigger on a new UK Pen Knife.

As I placed the order, I heard the disembodied voice of the Deacon in the back of my head: You can legally carry a lockblade knife in your area... You can legally carry a lockblade knife in your area...

Today, the knife arrived.

I get it now.

The same flat-ground, leaf-shaped blade as my beloved CF Caly... The same G10 scale material as my Para-Mil...

But no lock. How could I like this knife?

Now I understand all the UKPK mania... The ergonomics, the lightweight liner-less scales, the low-ride (and low profile) clip, the deep Deep DEEP finger choil! What's not to like??

(Did I mention the deep finger choil???!?)

I got my UKPK before the Caly 3 came out. I still don't have a Caly 3, and the UKPK has been in my left front pocket every day since I got it ;)

I have both the UKPK and the "Mini"-Manix, and i tend to say you made the right choice.

The Manix is one heck of a knife though, but as an EDC, the UKPK kicks the Manixes rear end :D

That said, I don't use my EDC knife for prying or other heavy duty tasks (but who does anyway?), so the UKPK is "strong" enough for ME... and since I know this knife doesn't HAVE a lock, I try to cut only with the SHARP side of the blade, so nothing annoying happens....

I LOVE my Manix, mind you :) but the UKPK sees waaay more pocket time. It just disappears in the pocket, and thats one thing the Manix does not for sure :-)..... and it' still there when you need it.

I have one on its way to me. My two most often EDC'd Spydercos are a Manix (Full size) and Military, so it'll be interesting to see how this smaller knife fits in.

Congrats MG_Saldivar on the UKPK.... glad you got it!

I have mine since 3 years, this is my number one ! Always in my pocket or in my hand !

I received mine today. I'm impressed. The "lock" strikes me as innovative. It's not like a traditional slipjoint, but sort of in between a slippie and a lockback from the looks of it.

I love how light the thing is, the ergos, the clip etc. The only thing I can think of that I'd change is to make the blade 2mm, otherwise it's an incredible small knife.

I plan to make this my dedicated work knife. I'll probably be EDCing it with a Military or Manix most days. As much as I like it I don't think I'm ready to give up carrying a "full-sized" folder, so I'll just do both.

I thought the UK had it bad. I still do. But holding this, I think I'd be okay being "limited" to a UKPK and a SAK farmer or something similar. As much as I like big knives they're overkill for a lot of EDC tasks, like opening a box or the mail, trimming nails or shaping a stick or wood into a tool. It's just the ergos on larger knives that seal the deal for me.

I hate to hijack my own thread but from comments I've seen on the forums, many UK knuts are already feeling like the UKPK gets them looks. :: sigh ::

And worse, carrying a UKPK *and* a Vic Farmer, the police might think the UKPK is an "unnecessary" "weapon" from what I've read over there.
