Ultimate deer knife

Puma Game Warden with a Gutting Blade and a RAT3 ! Should do the trick for anybody who wants to gut - skin & cut up.! All I use on Hogs.* Works great and have never had to sharpen either knife.

Here you go. Excuse me it was the model 428. I was away from my notes. DM

You know the $20 wally world Paklite skinner is a great deer knife.I just don't understand the practical use of a gut hook.If someone prefers having a gut hook on a hunting knife please join the conversation and enlighten me. David I hope all is well my friend.

Thats a shame. Glad we only have smoke. The Vanguard is a good model espically when Buck offered it with S30V. DM

I've always been fond of the blunt Spey esque blade profile of the 103 skinner. The blade length IMO is near perfect as well as the width. Also the 113 ranger skinner IMO is worthy of an honerable mention but the blade profile is a bit more utilitarian which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Whet, Yes, that seems to be the fly in the ointment. Where to draw the line from great skinner to utilitarian. My drop point 110 paperstone is more utilitarian but can be used as a skinner. Whereas, the 103 is more of a great skinner and may struggle in utilitarian work as it lacks some point. DM

Still looking for the gut hook fans to weigh in.There must be some since we see so many knives with them.

Well I'll add a few pennies to the gut hook chat. Funny thing is I have never used one of the Buck gut hook knives:eek:.

I have used a few knives with the gut hook on the end of the blade. Most were poorly designed and get deer hair caught in the hook and stop the cutting action due to getting clogged with cut hair. The only gut hook knife I used that worked like a champ was a huge knife called the Colt Serengeti Skinner, great skinning knife just to big for me. I like a gutting blade to be a straight edge with a blunt round tip, like the one on my Browning stag folder (Buck makes this blade for their discontinued selector knives).

As I said above, I have never used a Buck knife with a zipper/gut hook so I can't comment on how their design works. Here is a few photo's that show the Colt knife & the Browning knife.

I wont buy or use a knife with a guthook. I can't stand using them, and they totally ruin a blade's appearance IMO

I have never seen why there is even a perceived ''need'' for a 'hook...and the few I have personally tried to use suck horribly at their intended task.

The only use I have ever found for a guthook is to cut hay-twine off of square bales. Works OK at that.
