I had a bit of downtime for Thanksgiving, and I'm back in the saddle again. I figured since it was so close to Christmas, I'd try and come up with a few real nice EDCs that I could keep reasonably priced for stocking stuffers (or for your own stocking).
This pattern came a bit out of the blue, I was commissioned to make a small EDC box processing knife for a fellow that did a lot of receiving. I had a cutoff from a bar of 1084, and just took it to the grinder and freehanded it until I had something that was as small as possible but still could be gripped with 4 fingers, and worked well in an index finger on spine grip for zipping open boxes. The Wharncliffe was the original pattern. The handle shape was not planned.
One of my best customers was visiting the shop and saw the Wharncliffe sitting in my completed knives box. He said, "What's that thing? It's really strange looking." Then he picked it up, played with it for a second, and asked me if I could make him one too. Then he ended up ordering a second one.
It was an accidental design, but very comfortable and practical. I really wanted to do a higher end version, and after my customer's visit, I was inspired to draw a couple variants, which are the drop point and sheepsfoot patterns. I decided these would be perfect for the holiday season, so I decided to do an "Ultimate EDC" overkill version out of 3/16" XHP. These guys are hollow ground, with an edge thickness/profile that is tough but slim enough to cut well. This is basically a limited run of this pattern, I plan on making more of them, but in thinner stock and not quite as high end steel, with basic handle material, for under $100.
Wood is stabilized by K&G.
CTS-XHP is @62 w/cryo.
