Ultimate Folder, What is it?

The Chinook is one of my EDC's on the weekends and evenings.

It is very comfortable for me in jeans but kind of rough if you wear dress slacks a lot.

IMO, it's one of the best values in knives right now.

The chinook looks like a good choice. No way of making that lock fail!

Consider the Al Mar SERE 2000. It is my most recent acquisition. It's a bit a the heavy side (6 oz.), and it is very "handle-heavy", but it is billed as a folding survival knife. As such, it seems to fit the bill. Very comfortable in the hand and with a rock-solid lock up and VG 10 steel.

This is not a little, delicate, gentleman's knife. It's made for "down and dirty", rugged work.

So far I'm very impressed. I'll have more to say when I really put it through it's paces.

I don't know why anyone hasn't mentioned the Spyderco Military yet. Its MUCH lighter than the wegner and is super sharp. I find that the chinook is awfully heavy like a buck 110. Other good choices: Spyderco Police, Benchmade AFCK, most of the axis locks, and of course the camillus EDC (i know a little smaller than your requirements but my friend got one and is rubbing it in my face). BTW, perhaps the new Centofante?

YIKES!
I forgot about the SERE 2000 and the Starmate AND the Military! Those should have also been on my list, but I have not been carrying them much and the SERE hardly at all. I should be taking those memory enhancing pills, but I keep forgetting to take them.

They're all great EDC choices, but I think you should at least check out the Microtech LCC.
That folder has good strength, gent folder type good looks and cuts super nice with that thin ground blade.

ok, you guys have narrowed down the choices to the spyderco wegner, starmate, military, and chinook, Al Mar SERE 2000, BM 710, Buck Strider, and the Emerson Commander. Which ones of these cut efficiently while retaining blade and handle strength and comfort and is still good for an EDC?

Ok, my choice for an EDC is my SIFU...big, bad,and beautiful. However, they are not for everybody. With the knives that you have narrowed it down to I would get either the Al Mar SERE (First Choice) the knife is made with great quality. (Second) would be the Chinook it is fairly big but again nicly made. I have a Commander, and it is cool esp. with the wave (very fast opening) but it is not as "sturdy" as the others. I almost bought the Stider in tanto point, very strong in it's construction, but the blade was so thick that it had no edge at the tip ( And I mean DULL)the other's I can't comment on. Good luck.

imho either a crawford custom kasper ti fighter, or a BF spec edition smooth handle SIFU, or, a BM AFCK, 800S all imho of course.....i LOVE kasper designed knives, they fit my hand well....if ya are on a budget, the CRKT kasper pros are pretty darned good, and priced right too.....i also find myself carrying my spyderco millie more and more also........

I gotta second the Spyderco Lum Tanto. I just played with one today that had Ti handles and it was a dream but the G-10 handles should be just as nice and Spyderco has top of the line customer service. I also like the Emerson CQC7 B which is also a tanto. i have messed with one but never owned one. it seemed rock solid and if I hadn't discovered the Lum Tanto it might have been my next knife

I believe, the Military has it all. It´s lightweight, sturdy, ergonomic, one hand opening (due to the big blade hole, even possible to operate with your gloves on) and suberb slicer, thanks to the flat ground. On top of that it features more than good materials: G-10, and 440V.

I think the benchmade 710 is a top all round folding knife wish they make with VG-10 steel!! It would be perfect. Also the Spyderco Military in the same steel. But as they are with out the changes I would stay with the 710.

Just when I thought I had it narrowed down, a bunch more opinions!

I have just about every knife mentioned in this thread so far, and I would suggest the BM 710, or my personal favorite the Spyderco Native with a g-10 handle, I have a blue g-10 native, and a black g-10 native with a blue mop inlay. I also have a SS native, that is probably my favorite, due to the aus-10 blade. The Native is a great knife from a great company with a great leader(Sal Glesser). I can say that in my experience their customer service is the best I have dealt with.

You need an Emerson Mach 1. This knife will not slip out of your hand. The liners and stop pin are thicker than the Commander and it can still be WAVE'd. I just got mine in plainedge and it will be my EDC until I find something better. My numbered G10 Lum tanto came yesterday. It is a very slick knife. Smoothest opening out of all I have handled. It would be EDC, but I don't want to screw it up, especially one numbered 066v

Get an EKI Mach 1... or a MT LUDT :D

My vote would be for the MT LCC.

About the Mach 1. How is the quality control on those?
Also, how can you wave the Mach 1?

I got my Mach 1 from 1SKS.com and spoke directly with Spark. He reassured me that it is a good knife. I ditched class the day it arrived for some serious knifesturbating. This knife has none of the Q/C problems that were mentioned on the forums. IMHO, I would still add some loctite to the pivot. No blade play, mid tang lock up. You can wave almost any tip up, disk or dual thumbstud knife. With the Mach 1, the disk catches on the pocket and waves. Do it like a Commander but give it some sideways pressure when you draw.

Another knife I forget to mention is the Strider/Buck. I owned the tanto version and it was all business. If I were to buy it again, I would get it in spearpoint. Though the tip is dull for strength... I seriously doubt any of us will need our knives to pry a door out of its frame.
