Ultimate H.I. Kukri Khonvention - ideas and suggestions: what/where/when

Salt Lake City/Provo area works well for me too. :D We have lots of nice snow right now and in the summer there are awesome places to have an outdoor Khonvention. Reno would also be cool. ;)

There is a perfect place up the canyon for camping, hiking, shooting and so forth. If we did something here in Utah I'd help organize it, cook and so on.

Strobengh, do you live in the SLC area? I'm down in Provo.

I'm in Pittsburgh right now, but originally from Sandy.

Getting the blades back and forth is no problem just check your bags I do it all the time. I went to Vegas in Nov and attended a martial arts meetup I took several Khuks with me.

It would be a good chance to do some trades, also everyone could bring something for show and tell.

Some informal demos would be good such as Dan doing some sharpning tips , maybe have some cutting and chopping demos by those that do it a lot and some self defense ect..

I'll donate my kurks for the sharpening demo!

Reno sounds wonderful, I could definitely attend IF we set a time frame late in fall 2007 on a weekend. I won't have funds before then. Other locations would be nice, but I don't think it's worth asking Yangdu to travel far with a large number of khuks. If we have a really good turnout, we'll want a bunch of khuks to go around, and what better place to put a collection like that together than at the source?

As far as activities, I always enjoyed the chopping and sharpening at Nasty's. Tom Linton's presentations on Japanese swords were extremely informative as well. If we could get one of the kamis there that would be incredible, although I realize it isn't very feasible. Maybe we could do a modified cutting competition specialized for khukuris, with a small entry fee and a sharp shiny prize for the winner? I'll think about it and see what else I come up with.

I would like to see classes showing the Kukri in all it's uses from cooking to chopping wood

to self defence. It would be really cool to have Instructors from the Filipino and Burmese

traditions teaching how they use the Kukri.

"Filipino and Burmese"....???

Well, HI does make some filipino style blades. :D

He's probably thinking of Bando which is a filipino style art that incorporates khukuries. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bando

I guess if I was to have to leave on a moment's notice and get dropped out of a plane or fast moving car and had to give up my way of life and go into harms way regardless if it was the mean streets of Baghdad or the swamps of New Orleans I would take a kukri. Kukri knives can do anything that most knives cannot. So as the conversation ends and I quit laughing to the many answers, yes my friends, if I was picking the ultimate tactical-fighting knife, it would be the lowly kukri.

Ohh cool. :) Used to live over the freeway in South Jordan for one semester many years ago. Nice place. How's Pittsburgh?

My vote is for Utah or Reno like I said earlier. I like the ideas so far. And want to add Shooting to the list. Since I'm getting into shooting again I'd love to combine Knives and guns.

keep the suggestions coming...

How about the Blade Show in Atlanta. HI can set up a table and then we can all join Yangdu for an official Cantina dinner (lunch). Don't forget to bring a case or two of Bill's favorite brew.

GREAT IDEA!!! I bet HI could make a killing at Blade if they brought enough blades. I'd be glad to volunteer to help work the booth if such help were needed.

A booth a blade would be fantastic and maybe we could come in a day early and have a pre show meetup

hmmmmmm... looks like the majority of us are divided into 2 groups :)

maybe we should have 2 khonvention at the same time (atlanta & reno)
with a LIVE video conference auction from the reno khons box o blems :D

just an idea lol

I'd second the dallas recomendation...

definently a sharpening workshop... have a few sets of sharpening tools so you can try as you learn.

some various contests would be cool too...

I'd vote for Atlanta 1st, Sunday after Blade show, and then Reno 2nd. For me making a trip a year sans family is challenging, two a year isn't going to happen.

knife sharpening

self defense with khuk, if DIJ not available maybe we a could talk Finn into it.

Woodchucking contest, with the khuk of your choice cut thorugh 2x4, cut thru 4x4, cut thru 8 in diameter log. whoever fastest wins prize of Yangdu's choice.

Knife and tomahawk throwing workshop and contest.

Straight cutting contest with khuks and swords (tarwar, HI katana, etc)

Sheath making workshop (hint, hint Andy and Leather face)

shelter building using only a knife or a khuk 12" OAL or less.

Bow making

If you don't stop me, I will go on forever.

Btw, I know that at least one Bando System has adapted the Kukri and I once ran into

a teacher of Balintawak Arnis who used one as well. I have never witness Bando, but

Arnis with a Kukri is joy to behold (from out of distance of course)

keep the votes and ideas coming guys...we need to run this out long enough for everybody to see it.
