Ultimate hunting knife under $100?

Easy one, mate. :D

1.) U.S.M.C. Ka-bar fixed blade.

2.) Classic two blade folding hunter

3.) Buck Nighthawk fixed blade.

FWIW a really great combo would be the two blade
hunter and either one of the fixed blades. A cheap
reliable combination for well under a $100. :D :D

Life is good.....

Spyderco Moran Drop Point or Temperance plus a Victorinox Hunter lock blade SAK is a good combination for deer (if you shop around, you can get either one of the Spydercos and the Hunter for around $100).

Another vote for the Spyderco Moran drop point. Lots of bang for the buck. Excellent knife!

Bark River Knife and Tool has some great looking knives. Thinking about getting a Highland to use for what you are talking about.

I had two go to knives for under 100 that worked for me. First, was the alaskan knives caping/skinning knife combo. I think I paid 110 for it. I have more expensive knives, but I still use the alaskan fixed blade set. I think it is a lot of knife for the money. I have cleaned probably 30 deer, 150 ducks, and fish with that set. Easy to sharpen too.

Then I bought a benchmade folder (690?) in 154cm. Since it is so easy to carry I usually always have it on me when I need it. The blade holds an edge super and it's easy to sharpen. The serrated part of the blade is especially useful when cutting bones and hide on deer. It zips through a breast bone. The serrated adds a new level of cutting on a do it all knife.

Both of these have served me very well.

No Bucks?

The Buck Vanguard with the wood grain handle looks good, but I would prefer a flat grind and a more wear resistant steel.

Another recommendation for the Moran. If you want something a bit heavier duty, the Cold Steel Master Hunter in carbon steel is not bad.

DWK2 ("DancesWithKnives", until my account went dead)

Benchmade and AG Russell both have a Bird and Trout that would work great for me. Both are under 70.00. The Benchmade comes with the 440c steel and the Russell comes with VG10.

I would have said Cold Steele Master Hunter, until some recent dealings with them, so now I'll say Marbles Woodcraft.

There are some great choices out there for less than $100.

Marbles makes some awesome knives for that price range. I personally prefer the Fieldcraft, but there are others, such as the Woodcraft mentioned above.

Or you could always buy five Old Timer Sharpfingers.:)

I received a knife a couple of days ago that I picked up on ebay. The day I received it, a friend came over and had a small 110# hog in the back of his PU. He came over because he lost his knife, so I handed him the one I'd just received so he could do the necessary chores. He looked at the knife and said, you're kidding. I said, what? he says, this just doesn't look like a knife you'd carry. I said, give it a try. I'm interested in how it does on your hog. So right there in the back of his truck he cleaned, skinned and butchered the animal. When he finished he looked at me and said, how much and where can I get one. That's the best little knife I've ever used. He went on and on how he didn't have to touch up the blade during the entire process. All he had to do was clean the blade so it wouldn't contaminate the meat. I told him where I got it and how much I paid and he started laughing so hard he almost pee'd himself. A few swipes on my steel and the blade was scary sharp again. Here's the knife he used and ordered that night. Oh, I cut up another hog with it the next day. Smaller, but it zipped right through the chores and impressed the heck out of me. If you don't own one yet, you might want to check it out. For the money you'll spend, you can't go wrong.
