Ultimate hunting knife under $100?

I just got a Bark River Woodland Special in Stag (bone). I used it yesterday to carve a bow drill set out of a maple branch. I love the design and size. The knife did great. When I got home I checked the edge and it was still fairly sharp, but rolled here and there. It sharpened easily. Not sure if I am sold on the A2 yet, but time will tell.

It does come with a leather sheath which I would consider adequate.

I bought mine directly, but I just saw A.G. Russell has it for less. Live and learn.

Howdy!
Yeah, they come with as good of a sheath as you can expect when you get such a dynamite knife for the money.
I spoke with Mike (Stewart) on Friday - he is sending me a batch of knives. I am working up premium sheaths for them that he will sell as an accessory.
The sheaths will be a really primo veg tanned leather with a kydex liner. They'll be pricey - somewhere in the $50 - $75 range. However, when you get the chance to handle a Bark River knife, you'll see the need for the bullet proof sheath. These things are so sharp that they will slice right thru 10 oz leather like it is paper.
It's a real challenge to make a sheath for something this sharp!

Imagine you have $100 for a hunting knife. It will accompany you on bird and deer hunts and be your go-to knife for every hunting task other than cooking. What would you buy?

Here's my list of good hunting knives under $100:

1. Buck 110 - A mainstay, and for a C-note, you can get a custom 110 from Buck with an ATS-34 or BG-42 blade.

2. Buck Vanguard - Classic design, but if you're going to get this knife, go for the Bass Pro ATS-34 steel version. It'll outperform Buck's normal 420HC by a long shot.

3. Spyderco Moran - Nice blade shape, very ergonomic. VG-10 steel takes and keeps a wicked edge.

4. Cold Steel Master Hunter - It's a big hunk of a knife, but well designed. Get the Carbon V version if you get this knife. Mine gets scary sharp.

5. Shrade (Old Timer) Sharpfinger - I actually don't have this knife, but I do have the Uncle Henry Wolverine version with different handles and Shrade+ stainless. The 1095 carbon steel in the Sharpfinger is probably a better choice--just takes more care.

Also, don't forget Fallkniven. I've never owned this brand, but lots of folks like them, and I can vouch for the cutting ability of VG-10.

I just ordered a matched set of Cold Steel knives--the Pendleton Hunter and Mini-Hunter. The steel is AUS-8, and the knives come with nice Secure-ex sheaths. Don't know if I can recommend them yet since I haven't tried them.

I also have my eye on a Knives of Alaska "Handmade Series" in D2 steel. It runs a little over your budget, but looks like a fine knife.

I'm very happy with my Bark River Gameskeeper, which I got for $75 at a show. Very sharp, so far I have only had to strop it. The convex edge rocks!

I also like the Buck 119 and 110 that I have.

I haven't tried one, but the Spyderco Moran looks interesting, but I need a few more Bark Rivers first! Same with Fallknivens.

Sharpfingers are a very un-sung knife, as are the moras.

$100= FIVE Mora 2000s.

(or one, and eighty dollars for other stuff.)

I just wish they were sexier.:)
